Derrick Pumaren
Frederick "Derrick" S. Pumaren, better known on his nickname Manong Derrick, is a Filipino basketball coach who is currently the coach of the De La Salle Green Archers in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). He coached several teams in the UAAP, PBA, and PBL. Career Playing career Collegiate career Pumaren was a member of the UE Red Warriors 1978 championship team. Coaching career Magnolia (PBL) head coach (1983–1990) While being an assistant, Pumaren led the Magnolia to six Philippine Amateur Basketball League championship. Assistant coach (1985–1989) Pumaren was hired an assistant coach for San Miguel Beermen led by then import-coach Norman Black. The 1987 PABL season is the fifth season of the Philippine Amateur Basketball League (PABL). International Invitational Cup The First Conference opens on March 7. The participating teams were Filipino Cup champion YCO Shine Masters, Magnolia Juice Drinks, RFM-Swifts, Lhuillier-Converse, Purefoods, Sta.Lucia Realty, Philips Sardines and newcomer Lady's Choice. The format is a one-round eliminations among eight teams with the top four making it to the semifinals at the end of preliminary round. The 1986 PABL season is the fourth season of the Philippine Amateur Basketball League (PABL). Notable achievements The ESQ Merchants, carrying the colors of Pasig Giants, won the Asian Inter-city basketball tournament in Jakarta, Indonesia, by lording over commercial squads from Brunei, Singapore, Tokyo, Kuala Lumpur and host Jakarta, they scored a clean six-game sweep and ending the South Korea's four-year dominance in the Asian intercity cagefest by downing the Tigers from Seoul, 104–101 in overtime. The Philippine Basketball League (PBL) was a commercial semi-professional basketball league in the Philippines. The league was composed of several commercial teams with several collegiate and provincial stars. History The PBL was formed on May 6, 1983, a brainchild of San Miguel Corporation chairman Danding Cojuangco, under its original name the Philippine Amateur Basketball League (PABL). It was the successor of the defunct Manila Industrial and Commercial Athletic Association (MICAA), which folded during the early-1980s. During the inaugural PABL tournament, 37 teams divided into four divisions from collegiate and commercial ranks participated in the tournament that was played in the historic Rizal Memorial Coliseum. UAAP Season 53 is the 1990–91 athletic year of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines. Men's basketball The UAAP men's basketball competition opens on July 28 at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium after the opening ceremonies were twice postponed. Team standings Defending seniors champion De La Salle University swept the first round of eliminations with seven straight victories. The Green Archers, however, saw their first three victories being reversed to a loss, when the UAAP board, via a 5–1 vote, ruled that Green Archer Noli Locsin had not completed the required one-year residency in La Salle and its therefore ineligible to play this season. UAAP Basketball Championship
The UAAP Basketball Championship holds its basketball tournaments from September to December. Basketball is a mandatory sport in the University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP). All eight universities participate in the Men's, Women's, and Juniors (Boys') tournaments. The tournament is divided into two divisions, the Seniors' division, which is further subdivided into the Men's tournament, for male collegiate players, and the Women's tournament for female collegiate players. The other division is the Juniors' which is also subdivided into two tournaments for the male and female high school athletes. The UAAP basketball sport has a rich history of schools establishing dynasties. The 1998 PBA All-Star Weekend is the annual all-star weekend of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA).
