1985–86 FC Basel Season
The Fussball Club Basel 1893 1985–86 season was their 92nd season since their foundation on 15 November 1893. It was the club's 40th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football since their promotion in the 1945–46 season. FC Basel played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium. Urs Gribi was the club's chairman for the third consecutive year. Overview Pre-season Helmut Benthaus returned as first team manager, after his successful three-year term with VfB Stuttgart in which they won the Bundesliga in the 1983–84 season. He took over from caretaker manager Emil Müller. A number of players left the squad. Former Netherlands international Adrie van Kraay retired from active football. Swiss international player Martin Andermatt moved on to Grasshopper Club and Livio Bordoli moved on to Locarno. Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Neuchâtel Xamax Football Club Serrières or Neuchâtel Xamax FCS () is a Swiss football club based in Neuchâtel. It was created in 1970 through a merger between FC Cantonal, founded in 1906 and Swiss champions of 1916, and FC Xamax founded in 1912. The name ''Xamax'' comes from legendary Swiss international player 'Xam' Max Abegglen, one of the founding members. Enrique Mata (footballer)
Enrique Mata (born 10 May 1957) is a Spanish-Swiss retired footballer who played in the late 1970s, the 1980s and early 1990s. He played mainly as an attacking midfielder, but also as a forward. Mata played his youth football with FC Nordstern Basel and advanced to their first team in the 1977–78 season. At the end of that season Nordstern achieved promotion as division champions to the Nationalliga A. The following season Mata suffered relegation with Nordstern, the team coming last in the relegation round, but Mata stayed with the club. The following season Nordstern again achieved promotion as division runners-up. Mata also played the following season with the club. But soon after the start of the 1981–82 season he moved on to FC Grenchen one league lower. Here he played for only half a year and again Mata moved on, this time to Xamax. FC La Chaux-de-Fonds
FC La Chaux-de-Fonds is a Swiss football club based in La Chaux-de-Fonds. It was founded in 1894 and used to play at the Stade Charrière. History F.C. La Chaux-de-Fonds was founded on July 4, 1894, and won the Swiss first division in the seasons 1954, 1955, 1964. The team's most recent spell in the top division was 1986–87. Francois Laydu
Francois Laydu (10 February 1960 – 2017) was a Swiss footballer who played in the 1980s and early 1990s as defender. Laydu played his youth football by FC Montreux-Sports and advanced to their first team during the 1979–80 season in the 1st League. In summer 1980 he transferred to FC La Chaux-de-Fonds who played in the Nationalliga B, the second tier of Swiss football. In the 1982–83 season La Chaux-de-Fonds, with Laydu as central defender, achieved promotion to the Nationalliga A. In the following season Laydu played in all 30 of the seasons league games. Laydu joined FC Basel's first team for their 1985–86 season under team manager Helmut Benthaus. Laydu played his domestic league debut for his new club in the home game in the St. Jakob Stadium on 17 August 1985 as Basel were defeated 0–3 by Wettingen. Marco Schällibaum
Marco Schällibaum (born 6 April 1962) is a Swiss football manager and former player. He is the manager of Swiss Challenge League side Yverdon-Sport FC. Playing career As a player Schällibaum played 15 years in the Swiss first division from 1980 to 1995, playing in over 450 games for various top Swiss clubs and won three league titles. He also appeared in 50 Swiss Cup games, winning the Cup in 1983 with Grasshopper. He also played for the Swiss national football team from 1983 to 1988, making 31 appearances. André Ladner
André Ladner (born 20 May 1962) is a Swiss former professional and international footballer who played during the 1980s and early 1990s as defender. Club career Ladner played his youth football with Grasshopper Club and advanced to their first team during the 1980–81 Nationalliga A season. He played for the Grasshoppers for five seasons. The first season they were runners-up in the league and during the following seasons they were champions three times in a row. Gerhard Strack
Gerhard Strack (1 September 1955 – 21 May 2020) was a German footballer who played in the 1970s and 1980s. Club career Strack played his youth football ba locals clubs Glückauf Habbelrath-Grefrath (until 1966) und SpVg Frechen 20 (until 1973). He played one season by the youth of 1. FC Köln before he advanced to their first team. Strack played as a defender. Strack played eleven seasons in Köln. He played 339 games for them, of which 261 were in the Bundesliga. Nicolas Keller (born 27 May 1963) was a Swiss footballer who played in the 1980s. He played as midfielder, but also as defender. Keller first played for Chiasso in the 1980–81 Nationalliga A and 1981–82 seasons. Keller then joined FC Basel's first team during their 1982–83 season under head coach Rainer Ohlhauser.
