The 1985 IBF World Championships (World Badminton Championships) were held in Calgary, Canada, from June 10 to June 16, 1985. Scotiabank Saddledome
Scotiabank Saddledome is a multi-use indoor arena in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Located in Stampede Park in the southeast end of downtown Calgary, the Saddledome was built in 1983 to replace the Stampede Corral as the home of the Calgary Flames of the National Hockey League, and to host ice hockey and figure skating at the 1988 Winter Olympics. The facility also hosts concerts, conferences and other sporting championships, and events for the Calgary Exhibition and Stampede. It underwent a major renovation in 1994–95 and sold its naming rights, during which its original name of Olympic Saddledome was changed to Canadian Airlines Saddledome. The facility was given the name Pengrowth Saddledome in 2000, after Pengrowth Management Ltd. signed a ten-year agreement. Jens Peter Nierhoff (born 2 September 1960) is a retired badminton player of Denmark, noted for his powerful smash, who won a number of international titles in singles and men's doubles during the 1980s. Career Nierhoff won men's singles at the 1982 European Badminton Championships, European Championships, and men's doubles at the 1988 European Championships with Michael Kjeldsen.. He competed at the 1983 IBF World Championships in men's singles and lost to Han Jian (badminton), Han Jian in quarterfinals. Hariamanto Kartono
Hariamanto Kartono (; born 1954) is a retired male Chinese Indonesian badminton player. Career Partnered first with Rudy Heryanto and later with singles star Liem Swie King, Kartono was one of the world's leading doubles players in the early and mid-1980s. As upstarts, he and Heryanto took silver medals at the 1980 IBF World Championships in Jakarta, losing the final to veteran fellow countrymen Ade Chandra and Christian Hadinata. At the 1981 All-England Championships they avenged that loss in the semifinal, and went on to defeat another highly decorated Indonesian pair, Tjun Tjun and Johan Wahjudi, in the final. They won the All-Englands again in 1984 and the Indonesia Open in 1982 and 1983. Liem Swie King
Liem Swie King (; born 28 February 1956) is an Indonesian former badminton player who excelled from the late 1970s through the mid-1980s. He won the All England in 1978, 1979 and 1981. He was one of the world's leading singles players of his era. A world level player in men's doubles as well as men's singles, he was known for the ferocity of his jumping smash. Early life Liem was born on 28 February 1956 in Kudus Regency, Central Java. His parents were Ng Thian Poo and Oei See Moi from Putian, Fujian. He was the only son of eight children. During elementary school, he studied at Sekolah Tionghoa, and later moved to SD Negeri Dema'an II in 1965. Tian Bingyi
Tian Bingyi (; born July 30, 1963) is a former badminton star from China. Though he played some singles internationally early in his career, he soon specialised in men's doubles. Career From the mid 1980s to the early 1990s Tian and his regular partner Li Yongbo won numerous top tier international titles. They were contemporaries and rivals of the famous Korean team of Park Joo-bong and Kim Moon-soo, largely dividing the world's biggest championships between them for about eight seasons. Li Yongbo (; born September 18, 1962) is a retired Chinese male badminton player and the former head coach of Chinese National Badminton Team. Career As a player, he was a men's doubles specialist noted for his quickness, reflexes, and power. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s he shared numerous international titles with his regular partner Tian Bingyi. They were contemporaries and rivals of the famous Korean pair Park Joo-bong and Kim Moon-soo, largely dividing badminton's biggest doubles events between them for about eight seasons. Kim Moon-soo (badminton)
Kim Moon-soo (born 29 December 1963) is a former badminton player from South Korea. Career He has won 2 titles in the World Badminton Championships in men's doubles. He also won a gold medal at the Summer Olympics and 3 All England Open Badminton Championships in men's doubles. All of these were gained with fellow countryman Park Joo-bong, his regular partner during most his badminton career. In 1988, Kim married fellow 1985 World Champion Yoo Sang Hee after Yoo retired from international badminton. Kim himself retired in 1993, after contributing to Korea's Sudirman Cup victory. Park Joo-bong
Park Joo-bong (Hangul: 박주봉; Hanja: 朴柱奉; born 5 December 1964) is a former badminton player from South Korea who excelled from the early 1980s through the mid-1990s. Career Park is one of the most successful players ever in the World Badminton Championships with 5 titles, 2 of them in men's doubles and 3 in mixed doubles. He also won a gold and a silver medal at the Summer Olympics and 9 All England Open Badminton Championships titles. Though Park was primarily a doubles player, the greatest one ever in the opinion of some, he was capable of world class level singles which he displayed in occasional tournaments and Thomas Cup appearances early in his career and currently holds the South Korean national record of 103 consecutive wins in men's singles from 1981 to 1984. Zheng Yuli
Zheng Yuli (, born 1963) is a retired female badminton player from China. Career She earned a bronze medal as a semifinalist at both the 1985 IBF World Championships and 1987 IBF World Championships in women's singles, dropping three set matches in each case to her compatriots Han Aiping and Li Lingwei respectively. She won women's singles at the Japan Open (badminton), Japan Open in 1984 and at the Denmark Open (badminton), Denmark Open in 1984 and 1986. Li Lingwei
Li Lingwei (, born January 4, 1964) is a Chinese badminton player of the 1980s. She was elected as a member of the International Olympic Committee in 2012, and in December 2016, she was elected Vice President of the Chinese Olympic Committee. Li is heavily involved in improving women’s participation and fair representation in sport. Early years Born in Lishui, Zhejiang, China, on January 4, 1964, Li Lingwei weighed only at birth. Worried about Li’s health, her mother encouraged her to participate in non-contact sports such as badminton but Li indiscriminately loved sports. During her childhood, Li impressed everyone with sporting results such as finishing in first place in the 400-meter run. Wu Jianqui
Wu Jianqiu (, born 1962) is a retired female badminton player from China. Career Wu was one of China's leading combination women's singles and doubles players in the first several years after her country joined the International Badminton Federation (now Badminton World Federation). She won the Danish Open women's singles in 1982 (the first of the two Danish Opens that were played that year). In 1983 she won the prestigious All-England Open women's doubles title with Xu Rong and was runner-up in the singles to fellow countrywoman Zhang Ailing. She also earned a bronze medal in women's doubles with Xu Rong at the 1983 IBF World Championships.
