The 1983 National Challenge Cup was the 70th edition of the USSF's annual open soccer championship. Teams from the North American Soccer League declined to participate. New York Pancyprian-Freedoms defeated St. Louis Kutis SC in the final game. The score was 4–3. It would be the final time in the 20th century that a club would consecutively win the National Cup. The next time it would happen was when the Seattle Sounders FC won the 2010 title. New York Pancyprian-Freedoms is an American amateur soccer team based in Astoria, New York, United States. Founded in 1974, the team plays in the Eastern Premier Soccer League, a league at the fifth tier of the American Soccer Pyramid. The team plays its home games at Belson Stadium on the campus of at St. John's University. The team's colors are white and blue. The 1984 CONCACAF Champions' Cup was the 20th edition of the CONCACAF Champions' Cup, the annual international club association football competition held in the CONCACAF region (North America, Central America and the Caribbean). It determined that year's club champion in the CONCACAF region and was played from 15 March to 21 October 1984. The teams were split in two zones, North/Central America and Caribbean, (as North and Central America sections combined to qualify one team for the final), each one qualifying the winner to the final tournament. North American Soccer League (1968–1984)
The North American Soccer League (NASL) was the top-level major professional soccer league in the United States and Canada that operated from 1968 to 1984. It was the first soccer league to be successful on a national scale in the United States. The league final was called the Soccer Bowl from 1975 to 1983 and the Soccer Bowl Series in its final year, 1984. The league was headed by Commissioner Phil Woosnam from 1969 to 1983. The NASL laid the foundations for soccer (or association football) in the United States that helped lead to the country hosting the 1994 FIFA World Cup and the set-up of Major League Soccer (MLS) in 1996. Seattle Sounders Football Club is an American professional men's soccer club based in Seattle. The Sounders compete as a member of the Western Conference of Major League Soccer (MLS). The club was established on November 13, 2007, and began play in 2009 as an MLS expansion team. The Sounders are a phoenix club, carrying the same name as the original Sounders franchise that competed in the North American Soccer League (NASL) from 1974 to 1983. The club's majority owner is Adrian Hanauer, and its minority owners are the estate of Paul Allen, Drew Carey, and 14 families from the Seattle area.
