League Of Ireland
The League of Ireland ( ga, Sraith na hÉireann), together with the Football Association of Ireland, is one of the two main governing bodies responsible for organising association football in the Republic of Ireland. The term was originally used to refer to a single division league. However today the League of Ireland features five divisions – the Premier Division, the First Division, U19 Division, U17 Division, U15 Division and starting U13 Division. The League of Ireland has always worked closely with the FAI and in 2006 the two bodies formally merged. All the divisions are currently sponsored by Airtricity and as a result the league is also known as the SSE Airtricity League. 1983–84 European Cup
The 1983–84 season of the European Cup football club tournament was won for a fourth time by Liverpool in a penalty shootout in the final against Roma. The game had finished 1–1. Phil Neal had scored for Liverpool and Roberto Pruzzo for Roma. It was the seventh title in eight seasons for English clubs. Hamburg, the defending champions, were eliminated by Dinamo București in the second round. Mick Fairclough
Michael Joseph Fairclough (born 22 October 1952, in Annagassan) was an Irish former professional footballer who played as a midfielder for Drogheda United, Dundalk and Huddersfield Town. Mick started his football career with Drogheda Youths and won an FAI Youth Cup medal in 1970 scoring in the replay of the final. At age 18 he played in the 1971 FAI Cup Final with Drogheda who lost to Limerick after a replay. This qualified Drogheda for the Blaxnit Cup where Drogheda lost on penalties to eventual winners Linfield. Mick was bought by Huddersfield Town (who were then in the English Premier Division) in August 1971 and made his first team debut against Wolves in October 1971. Michael O'Connor (footballer, Born 1960)
Michael O'Connor (born 8 October 1960) is an Irish former football player and manager. Club career O'Connor made his League of Ireland debut for Athlone Town on 4 March 1979. During his time at St Mel's Park he was twice top scorer in the League of Ireland in 1981/82 and 1984/85. He is also the all-time leading scorer for Athlone. He scored in the Parken Stadium in the first round of the 1981–82 European Cup. O'Connor signed for Shamrock Rovers in October 1985 and made his debut in a 3–0 win over Bohemians on 27 October. He scored his first goal for the Hoops on 17 November 1985 at Home Farm. He played in a memorable friendly win over Arsenal in February 1986 when his fellow Athlone man and ex-teammate Noel Larkin scored the winner. Anthony Clive Morris (30 September 1962 – 1 August 2020) was an English newsreader for ''Granada Reports'', produced by ITV Granada. He previously worked as a reporter and bulletin presenter for ''BBC North West Tonight'' and for a brief period was a reporter for the BBC national news. Biography Early life Morris was born and brought up in the city of Portsmouth in Hampshire, but later moved to St Helens, Merseyside. Liam Buckley
Liam Buckley (born 14 April 1960), is an Irish former professional footballer. He made two appearances for the Republic of Ireland national football team. He was most recently the manager of League of Ireland Premier Division club Sligo Rovers FC. Playing career Buckley began his League of Ireland career with Shelbourne and signed for Shamrock Rovers as a full-time player in the 1979 close season. He scored his first goal for the Hoops against his former club at Milltown on 21 October 1979 and he went on to score another seven league goals that season. On 30 April 1980 he represented the League of Ireland against Argentina at the River Plate Stadium where Diego Maradona scored in a 1–0 defeat. Brian Duff (footballer)
Brian Barnett Duff (September 15, 1930 – February 25, 2016) was a United States district judge of the United States District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Education and career Duff was born on September 15, 1930, in Dallas, Texas as the third of ten children. He received an Artium Baccalaureus degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1953 and received a Juris Doctor from DePaul University College of Law in 1962. Duff was in the United States Navy as a lieutenant in the JAG Corps from 1953 to 1956 and served in the United States Naval Reserve from 1957 to 1961. He was an assistant to Chief Executive Officer of Banker's Life and Casualty from 1962 to 1967. Duff was a Vice President and general counsel of R. H. Kevin Cassidy (born 1981) is an Irish-Scottish Gaelic footballer, businessperson, columnist and commentator. Though born in Glasgow, Scotland, he has been living in Gaoth Dobhair, County Donegal from a young age. Brendan Bradley (born 7 June 1950) is an Irish former footballer. He holds the record for the highest number of goals, 235, scored by an individual in the League of Ireland with a club record 181 for Finn Harps Career Derry City A talented youngster, appearing in the Derry and District League at the age of 15, Bradley signed for Derry City at the age of sixteen. Although a regular in the club's reserve team he only made a handful of first team appearances during his three seasons with the club; his route to the first team being blocked by the form of regular striker Danny Hale. Noel Larkin
Noel Larkin (born 6 January 1955, in Athlone) is an Irish former footballer who played for Athlone Town, Shamrock Rovers and Derry City F.C., Derry City. Biography Noel made his League of Ireland debut in 1971 at Tolka Park against Shelbourne as a left back. His versatility was a major plus for his hometown club as in his thirteen years at St Mel's Park he played in every outfield position. Noel won the League of Ireland twice and the League of Ireland Cup three times with his home club. He also represented the club in the UEFA Champions League, European Cup and memorably in the UEFA Cup against A.C. Milan, AC Milan in 1975. Athlone Town A
Athlone (; ) is a town on the border of County Roscommon and County Westmeath, Republic of Ireland, Ireland. It is located on the River Shannon near the southern shore of Lough Ree. It is the second most populous town in the Midland Region, Ireland, Midlands Region with a population of 21,349 in the 2016 census.
