1982 Victorian State Election
The 1982 Victorian state election, held on Saturday, 3 April 1982, was for the 49th Parliament of Victoria. It was held in the Australian state of Victoria to elect 81 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 22 members of the 44-member Legislative Council. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. History Victoria was proclaimed a Colony on 1 July 1851 separating from the Colony of New South Wales by an act of the British Parliament. The Legislative Assembly was created on 13 March 1856 with the passing of the ''Victorian Electoral Bill'', five years after the creation of the original unicameral Legislative Council. Ron Wells (politician)
Ronald James Herbert "Ron" Wells (born 22 September 1935) is a former Australian politician. He was born in Cardiff, New South Wales, to Cecil Wells, a businessman, and Mildred, ''née'' Tombs. He received a Higher Diploma in Accounting (Honours) from the University of Western Sydney in 1954, a Bachelor of Veterinary Science (Honours) from Sydney University in 1959, a PhD from Cambridge University in 1964, and a Master of Veterinary Science from Melbourne University in 1970. He served in the RAAF from 1955 to 1956 and worked as a veterinarian in 1960 before going to Cambridge. On his return in 1965 he was a foundation senior lecturer at the University of Melbourne's School of Veterinary Science, holding that position until 1985. Donald James Mackinnon (1 November 1928 – 1 October 2017) was an English-born Australian politician. He was born in London to the business executive and diplomat Donald Mackinnon (son of politician Donald Mackinnon) and Mary Hindle James. His uncle, Dan Mackinnon, became an Australian federal politician in the 1950s. Mackinnon was educated at St George's College in Buenos Aires and then at Geelong Grammar School. Electoral District Of Box Hill
The electoral district of Box Hill is an electoral district of the Victorian Legislative Assembly, covering an area of in eastern Melbourne. It contains the suburbs of Box Hill, Box Hill North, Box Hill South, Mont Albert, Mont Albert North, most of Blackburn, Blackburn North, and Blackburn South, and parts of Balwyn North, Burwood, Burwood East, and Surrey Hills. It lies within the Eastern Metropolitan Region in the upper house, the Legislative Council. Electoral boundary changes The electoral district of Doncaster was split off from Box Hill and created in 1976 due to population growth. A redistribution of electorate boundaries in 1991 abolished the Balwyn electorate and incorporated most of it into Box Hill. Douglas Richard Newton (born 5 July 1950) is an Australian politician. He was born at Ivanhoe to clerk Cecil James Newton and Gwendaline Clare Bowden. He attended La Trobe University, where he received a Bachelor of Science, and later Hawthorn State College for a Diploma of Education. From 1973 to 1975 he worked as a research assistant in the Victorian Forest Commission's fire research section, moving to Melbourne University's Westernport Bay Environmental Study Group from 1975 to 1978. From 1979 to 1982 he taught at Preston East Technical School. On 27 December 1980 he married fellow schoolteacher Helen Frances Eldridge; they had one daughter. Keith Robert McCance (28 November 1929 – 2 January 2008) was an Australian politician. He was born in Ascot Vale to schoolteacher Robert Norman McLeod McCance and Ivy Emily McGill. He was educated at Korumburra, Kew East and Box Hill before graduating from Wesley College in 1947. He worked in a variety of jobs and in 1946 joined the Kew branch of the Liberal Party. On 7 February 1953 he married Joy Myra Cullis; they had two children. McCance eventually became a share registrar, managing share companies from 1960 to 1979. In 1979 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Bennettswood, but he was defeated after a single term in 1982. David Kennedy (Australian Politician)
Andrew David Kennedy (born 20 March 1940) is a former Australian politician. Born in Ulverstone, Tasmania, he attended University High School in Melbourne and then the University of Melbourne, after which he became a teacher in Victorian state schools. In 1969, he was elected as a Labor member to the Australian House of Representatives in the by-election for the seat of Bendigo following Noel Beaton's resignation. He held the seat until his defeat in 1972. In 1982, he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the member for Bendigo, and in 1985 he transferred to Bendigo West, a position he held until 1992 when the Labor government was defeated. Kennedy's older brother, Cyril James Kennedy, also served in the Victorian state parliament, as the member for the Legislative Council seat of Waverley from 1979 to 1992.
