The 1981 National Rowing Championships was the tenth edition of the National Championships, held from 17–19 July 1981 at the National Water Sports Centre in Holme Pierrepont, Nottingham. Holme Pierrepont National Watersports Centre
Holme Pierrepont Country Park, home of The National Water Sports Centre is located in the hamlet of Holme Pierrepont near Nottingham, England and on the River Trent. It is used for many different types of sports and has recently received significant investment which has enabled a major refurbishment of existing facilities as well as introduction of new facilities. Run by Serco on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, it was previously one of five National Sports Centres, and is a unique sporting venue set in the centre of the country. History The centre was constructed during 1970 and 1971 on a former gravel works and required the excavation of one and a half million Cubic yard, cubic yards of material. The centre opened in 1971 and won second prize in the 1972 Times/RICS Conservation Awards and was consequently chosen to host the first British Rowing Championships, National Rowing Championships in 1972. Astrid Ayling
Astrid Ayling (née Hohl; born 9 December 1951) is a retired German and British rower. She competed for Great Britain at the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1984 Summer Olympics. Rowing career In 1975 she finished fourth in the double sculls for West Germany at the 1975 World Rowing Championships. After marrying fellow British national rowing champion Richard Ayling in 1976 she competed for Great Britain. In 1977 she was part of the double scull that reached the final and finished fifth at the 1977 World Rowing Championships in Amsterdam. This was the first time that a British women's crew had reached a world final. She later won the 1977 National Championships single and double sculls title (with Pauline Hart) rowing for Kingston. Pauline Wright
Pauline D Wright (born 2 December 1954) is a retired British rowing cox who competed at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the 1980 Summer Olympics. Rowing career Wright participated in the 1974 World Rowing Championships in Lucerne which was the inaugural championships for women. Competing in the quadruple sculls event the crew were eliminated in the heats. She won a national title in the coxed four at the 1975 National Championships and she was part of the coxed four at the 1975 World Rowing Championships in Nottingham, the crew finished 9th overall after a third-place finish in the B final. She was selected as cox for the Great Britain crew that competed in the women's coxed four at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal. Joanna Patricia Toch ( ; born 13 October 1961) is a British Olympian and a practising barrister. Beverly Jones
Beverly Ann Jones (born 25 November 1956) is a retired British rower who competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Rowing career Jones won the quadruple sculls event, with Rosie Clugston, Jane Curry, Sue Handscomb and E Morris (cox), at the 1977 National Championships. Consequently she was selected in the quad boat for the 1977 World Rowing Championships for Great Britain. In 1978 she won quadruple sculls again at the 1978 National Championships before rowing in a second World Championships in 1979. Gillian 'Gill' Hodges (born 13 August 1957) is a retired British rower who competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics and the 1984 Summer Olympics. Pauline Janson (born 26 November 1957) is a former British rower who competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Rowing career Janson took up rowing while studying mathematics at St Hilda's College, Oxford and became Captain of Boats before rowing in the 1978 and 1979 women's boat race in 1978 and 1979. After joining the British training squad in 1980 she was selected to represent Great Britain women's coxed four event at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow. Lin Clark
Linda D Clark née Linda Lacey (born 1 November 1949) is a retired rower who competed for Great Britain at the 1976 Olympics and 1980 Olympics . Rowing career Clark took up rowing in 1972, the same year in which she married Olympic rower Jim Clark. She went on to represent Great Britain from 1974 to 1987. In 1974, while rowing for the Civil Service Ladies Rowing Club she won the coxless pairs with Liz Monti, at the 1974 National Rowing Championships and was consequently selected by Great Britain for the 1974 World Rowing Championships in Lucerne which was the inaugural championships for women. Jane Mary Cross (born 25 August 1961) is a former British rower who competed at the 1980 Summer Olympics. Rowing career Cross first became interested in rowing at a young age when she was part of the Wraysbury Skiff and Punting Club, which led to joining the Weybridge Ladies ARC in 1977.
