American Soccer League (1933–1983)
The American Soccer League has been a name used by four different professional soccer sports leagues in the United States. The second American Soccer League was established in summer 1933 following the collapse of the original American Soccer League, which lasted from 1921 until spring 1933. The new league was created on a smaller scale and with smaller budgets. This league existed until over-expansion and financial limitations led to its collapse in 1983. Two successor leagues later operated. History In the fall of 1933, the second American Soccer League was established, surviving until 1983. Like the original ASL, this league operated primarily in the Northeastern United States for much of its existence. In the sport of association football, a defender is an outfield position whose primary role is to stop attacks during the game and prevent the opposition from scoring. Centre-backs are usually positioned in pairs, with one full-back on either side to their left and right, but can be played in threes with or without full-backs. Clyde Watson
Clyde Watson (born Guyana) is a retired Guyanese footballer who played professionally in the American Soccer League. He also served as an assistant coach at the Washington Freedom. Watson attended Clemson University, where he played on the men's soccer team from 1973 to 1976. He was All ACC each of his four seasons with the Tigers. In 2002, he was named to the ACC 50th Anniversary Team. In 1979, he was a First Team All Star with the New York Eagles of the American Soccer League. In 1980 and 1981, he played for the Pennsylvania Stoners of the American Soccer League. Watson represented Guyana in 1982 World Cup qualifying, scoring four goals in the first round series versus Grenada. Fernando Clavijo
Fernando Caetano Clavijo Cedrés (January 23, 1956 – February 8, 2019) was a Uruguayan-American soccer defender and former head coach of the New England Revolution and Colorado Rapids of Major League Soccer. He played three seasons in the American Soccer League, two in the North American Soccer League and ten in the Major Indoor Soccer League. He earned 61 caps with the United States men's national soccer team and eight with the U.S. national futsal team. He later coached both indoor and outdoor teams as well as at the national team level with Nigeria and Haiti. He was a member of the National Soccer Hall of Fame and is a 2014 inductee into the Indoor Soccer Hall of Fame. Walter Schlothauer
Wally is a retired U.S. soccer player and coach. He played in several outdoor and indoor leagues. In 1980, he was the American Soccer League Rookie of the Year with the Cleveland Cobras. Schlothauer attended Mentor High School where he holds the school's single game (5), season (23) and career (39) scoring records. He was a two time All State soccer player in 1976, was named a High School All American. While in high school, he was selected to the first U.S. U-19 team which went on a tour of Germany in October 1975. Schlothauer entered Cleveland State University in 1976, playing on the men's soccer team until 1979. He is third on the team's list of career assists leaders. Don Tobin
Don Tobin (1 November 1955) is an English retired footballer who played in leagues including the English Football League, the League of Ireland, the American Soccer League, and Major Indoor Soccer League. Since 1995 he has coached at various levels in the Tampa Bay Area, most often with women's teams. Playing career As a youth, Tobin spent a brief period with the Everton Academy before catching on at age 16 with the First Division senior club, Everton in 1971. From there he moved to Rochdale of the Third Division for three years. He spent one season at Witton Albion and one in Ireland at Sligo Rovers before moving to the United States. Adrian Brooks
Adrian Brooks (born 2 October 1957) is a former professional footballer who spent two seasons in the North American Soccer League and at least one in the Major Indoor Soccer League. He was a 1977 and 1978 first team All American, coached at the collegiate level and is a sales representative for Adidas. Brooks attended Philadelphia Textile, playing on the men's soccer team from 1975 to 1978. He was a 1976 second team and 1977 and 1978 first team All American and graduated with a bachelor's degree in business management in 1978. In 1979, the Atlanta Chiefs selected Brooks in the first round of the North American Soccer League draft. He played 29 games in 1979, but only one in 1980. A midfielder is an outfield position in association football. Midfielders may play an exclusively defensive role, breaking up attacks, and are in that case known as defensive midfielders.
