1980 Big Ten Conference Football Season
The 1980 Big Ten Conference football season was the 85th season of college football played by the member schools of the Big Ten Conference and was a part of the 1980 NCAA Division I-A football season. The 1980 Big Ten champion was Michigan. The Wolverines lost two of their first three games but went undefeated thereafter, culminating in a 23–6 victory over the Washington Huskies in the 1981 Rose Bowl (the program's first bowl victory under head coach Bo Schembechler). Michigan was ranked No. 4 in the final AP Poll, led the Big Ten in scoring defense (10.8 points per game), and did not allow a touchdown in the final 22 quarters of the season. Schembechler was selected as the Big Ten Coach of the Year. The Ohio State Buckeyes started the season ranked No. 1 in the AP Poll, but finished the season ranked No. 15 after compiling a 9–3 record and losing to Penn State in the 1980 Fiesta Bowl. Doug Donley
Douglas Max Donley (born February 6, 1959) is a former American football wide receiver in the National Football League (NFL) for the Dallas Cowboys and Chicago Bears. He was selected in the second round of the 1981 NFL Draft. He played college football at Ohio State University. Early years Donley attended Cambridge High School (Class of 1977), where he was a three-sport standout in football, track and basketball, earning the nickname 'White Lightning' for his blazing speed. On the gridiron, Donley was a three-year letterman at running back for the Bobcats, finishing with a career total of 2,572 rushing yards. He also had 226 yards receiving and 1,028 yards in kick returns for a career all-purpose yardage total of 3,826 yards to go with 31 touchdowns. Mel Owens
Mel Tyrae Owens (born December 7, 1958) is a former American football linebacker. He played college football at the University of Michigan from 1977 to 1980. He was selected by the Los Angeles Rams in the first round (ninth overall pick) of the 1981 NFL Draft. He played nine seasons as a linebacker in the National Football League (NFL), all with the Rams. Jeffrey Schuh (born May 22, 1958 in Crystal, Minnesota) is a former linebacker in the National Football League. Schuh was drafted in the seventh round of the 1981 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals and spent five seasons with the team. Timothy Alan Krumrie (born May 20, 1960) is a former American football nose tackle who played his entire National Football League career for the Cincinnati Bengals, from 1983 through 1994. Early years Krumrie was raised on a dairy farm outside of Mondovi, Wisconsin. He played football at Mondovi High School. Also a standout wrestler for the Buffaloes, Krumrie won the heavyweight state title in 1979, the last year all schools were combined in one division. Each year since 2009, the Tim Krumrie Award is given to the outstanding high school senior defensive lineman in Wisconsin. The award is given by the Wisconsin Sports Network and WisSports.net. Bubba Paris
William "Bubba" Paris (born October 6, 1960) is a former professional American football offensive tackle who played for the San Francisco 49ers of the NFL from 1983 to 1990 and for the Indianapolis Colts and Detroit Lions in 1991. He was a member of three 49ers teams that won the Super Bowl. He won the Len Eshmont Award in 1987, as selected by his teammates on the 49ers. Edward William "Ed" Muransky (born January 20, 1960) is a former professional American football offensive tackle who played for the Los Angeles Raiders of the National Football League (NFL) and Orlando Renegades of the United States Football League (USFL). Jay Hilgenberg
Jay Walter Hilgenberg (born March 21, 1959) is an American former professional football player who was a center in the NFL. He played for the Chicago Bears, Cleveland Browns and the New Orleans Saints from 1981 to 1993. He is the son of All-American University of Iowa center Jerry Hilgenberg and nephew of Minnesota Vikings linebacker Wally Hilgenberg. His brother Joel Hilgenberg played center for the New Orleans Saints, and the brothers were teammates in 1993 for the Saints.
