1979–80 FC Basel Season
The Fussball Club Basel 1893 1979–80 season was their 86th season since the club was founded. It was their 34th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football after they won promotion during the season 1945–46. They played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium. René Theler was the club's chairman for the fourth consecutive season. Overview Pre-season Helmut Benthaus was first team manager for the fifteenth consecutive season. There were a number of players that left the squad during the off-season. Midfield player Urs Siegenthaler moved on to Schaffhausen after eight years and 112 league games with the club. Stricker Roland Schönenberger moved on to Young Boys after four seasons, he had played 110 league games and scored 41 league goals. Defender Paul Fischli ended his professional career. FC Basel
Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Basel have competed in European competitions every season since 1999–2000. They have qualified for the Group stages of the Champions League more times than any other Swiss club – a total of seven times – and are the only Swiss club to have ever qualified to the Group stages directly. Roland Schönenberger
Roland Schönenberger (born 10 October 1955) is a Swiss former footballer who played for FC Basel. He played as a forward. Club career Schönenberger played his youth football with local club FC Wangen bei Olten. He joined Basel's first team under team manager Helmut Benthaus in their 1974–75 season. After two games in the Cup of the Alps and one in the Swiss League Cup, he made his domestic league debut for his new club in the home game at the St. Jakob Stadium on 17 August 1974 as Basel drew 2–2 draw with Xamax in the first game of the season. He scored his first goal for the club on 19 October that year as Basel won 3–0 at home to Vevey-Sports. In his first season, Basel ended the domestic league in fourth position, he played 19 league games scoring six goals. He played two Swiss Cup games; Basel won the Cup but Schönenberger did not figure in the final line up. Manfred Jungk
Manfred Jungk (born 12 May 1955) is a German retired footballer who played in the late 1970s as defender. Jungk joined FC Basel's first team for their 1979–80 season under head-coach Helmut Benthaus. After playing in seven test games, Jungk played his domestic league debut for the club in the home game in the St. Jakob Stadium on 11 August as Basel won 2–1 against Sion. The season 1979–80 Nationalliga A was an exciting season. After the Qualifying phase Servette, Grasshopper Club and Basel were within three points of each other. The close rivalry remained until the end of the season. In the second last game Basel were hosts to Servette, winning 1–0. In the last match of the season Basel were away against Zürich. Winning 4–2 Basel became champions and were two points ahead of both Grasshoppers and Servette who fished second and third respectively.
