1979–80 FC Basel Season
The Fussball Club Basel 1893 1979–80 season was their 86th season since the club was founded. It was their 34th consecutive season in the top flight of Swiss football after they won promotion during the season 1945–46. They played their home games in the St. Jakob Stadium. René Theler was the club's chairman for the fourth consecutive season. Overview Pre-season Helmut Benthaus was first team manager for the fifteenth consecutive season. There were a number of players that left the squad during the off-season. Midfield player Urs Siegenthaler moved on to Schaffhausen after eight years and 112 league games with the club. Fussball Club Basel 1893, widely known as FC Basel, FCB, or just Basel, is a Swiss football club based in Basel, in the Canton of Basel-Stadt. Formed in 1893, the club has been Swiss national champions 20 times, Swiss Cup winners 13 times, and Swiss League Cup winners once. Roland Schönenberger
Roland Schönenberger (born 10 October 1955) is a Swiss former footballer who played for FC Basel. He played as a forward. Club career Schönenberger played his youth football with local club FC Wangen bei Olten. He joined Basel's first team under team manager Helmut Benthaus in their 1974–75 season. After two games in the Cup of the Alps and one in the Swiss League Cup, he made his domestic league debut for his new club in the home game at the St. Jakob Stadium on 17 August 1974 as Basel drew 2–2 draw with Xamax in the first game of the season. He scored his first goal for the club on 19 October that year as Basel won 3–0 at home to Vevey-Sports. Manfred Jungk
Manfred Jungk (born 12 May 1955) is a German retired footballer who played in the late 1970s as defender. Jungk joined FC Basel's first team for their 1979–80 season under head-coach Helmut Benthaus. After playing in seven test games, Jungk played his domestic league debut for the club in the home game in the St. Jakob Stadium on 11 August as Basel won 2–1 against Sion. The season 1979–80 Nationalliga A was an exciting season. After the Qualifying phase Servette, Grasshopper Club and Basel were within three points of each other. The close rivalry remained until the end of the season. In the second last game Basel were hosts to Servette, winning 1–0. In the last match of the season Basel were away against Zürich. Winning 4–2 Basel became champions and were two points ahead of both Grasshoppers and Servette who fished second and third respectively. Serge Gaisser
Serge Gaisser (born 5 January 1958) is a French former professional footballer who played as a midfielder and is best known for his years with FC Basel and FC Mulhouse. Career Born in Muespach, Gaisser grew up in Saint-Louis, Haut-Rhin and started his football by the localclub Saint-Louis Neuweg, who at that time played in the French Division 3, the third tier of French football. However, he started his professional football career by Racing Besançon in the 1977–78 French Division 2. But because he only played in six games during the entire season as the team finished in second position in the league, Gaisser returned somewhat disillusioned to Saint-Louis, who in the meantime had suffered relegation. Neuchâtel Xamax Football Club Serrières or Neuchâtel Xamax FCS () is a Swiss football club based in Neuchâtel. It was created in 1970 through a merger between FC Cantonal, founded in 1906 and Swiss champions of 1916, and FC Xamax founded in 1912. Ernst Schleiffer (born 5 December 1957) is a Swiss retired footballer who played in the late 1970s and 1980s as defender. Schleiffer first played for Neuchâtel Xamax and he made seven appearances for them during the 1978–79 Nationalliga A season. Schleiffer then joined FC Basel's first team for their 1979–80 season under head-coach Helmut Benthaus. After playing in seven test games Schleiffer played his debut for his new club in the first round of the Swiss League Cup on 4 August 1979 as he was substituted in for Arthur von Wartburg in the 72 minute. But he could not save the team from being defeated 0–1 and being knocked out of the tournament by the Young Boys. René Hasler
René Hasler (born 18 June 1948) is a Swiss former footballer who played for FC Basel for most of his career, and the Swiss national team. Career Hasler started his career at FC Zürich in 1969 and left two years later to join FC Basel, where he won two league titles consecutively in 1972 and 1973, and the Swiss Cup in 1975. He then moved to Neuchâtel Xamax in 1976 where he played for three years before returning to St. Jakob Stadium, where he helped Basel win another title in 1980. Hasler earned 25 caps for the Swiss national team, the first of which coming on 21 October 1972 in a 0–0 draw with Italy in Bern. His last game in a Switzerland shirt was a 2–1 loss to Spain on 21 September 1977, also in Bern. Coppa delle Alpi (translated as ''Cup of the Alps'') was a friendly football tournament, first organized by the Italian national league as it started in 1960 and then they were aided by the Swiss League from 1962, for the reason that the majority of the Alps are in Switzerland. The UEFA Cup Winners' Cup was a European football club competition contested annually by the winners of domestic cup competitions.
