1979 World Figure Skating Championships
The 1979 World Figure Skating Championships were held in Vienna, Austria from March 13 to 18. At the event, sanctioned by the International Skating Union, medals were awarded in men's singles, ladies' singles, pair skating, and ice dance. The ISU Representative was John R. Robin Cousins
Robin Cousins, MBE (born 17 August 1957) is a British former competitive figure skater who was BBC Sports Personality of the Year in 1980. He was the 1980 Olympic champion, the 1980 European champion, a three-time World medalist (1978–1980) and four-time British national champion (1977–1980), winning all of these titles during his amateur career. He followed this with a successful career as a professional figure skater and later starred in ice shows as well as producing several of his own. He is able to spin in either direction, both clockwise and anti-clockwise, which is an unusual skill for a figure skater. Off the ice, Cousins has commentated on figure skating events for the BBC, and he assumed the position of head judge on ITV's '' Dancing on Ice'' show from 2006 to 2014. Scott Cramer
Scott Cramer (born August 18, 1958) is an American former competitive figure skater. He is the 1976 Prague Skate champion, 1979 Ennia Challenge Cup champion, 1979 Skate America silver medalist, and a two-time U.S. national silver medalist. Life and career Cramer was born in Rochester, New York. His coaches were Pieter Kollen and Albert Edmonds. He won four national medals – bronze in 1976, silver in 1977 and 1979, and pewter in 1980. Internationally, he won gold at the 1976 Prague Skate, bronze at the 1977 Skate Canada International, gold at the 1979 Ennia Challenge Cup, and silver at the 1979 Skate America. He placed ninth at the 1977 World Championships in Tokyo and fifth at the 1979 World Championships in Vienna. Charles Tickner
Charles Frederick Tickner (born November 13, 1953 in Lafayette, California) is an American figure skater. Tickner won the gold medal at the 1978 World Figure Skating Championships, skating to music from Georges Bizet's '' Carmen'' and Jules Massenet's ''Le Cid (opera)'' for his long program. He also won the bronze medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics and the 1980 World Championships. Andrei Minenkov
Andrei Olegovich Minenkov (russian: Андрей Олегович Миненков; born 6 December 1954) is a Russian retired ice dancer who represented the Soviet Union. With his wife Irina Moiseeva, he is the 1976 Olympic silver medalist, 1980 Olympic bronze medalist, and two-time world champion (1975 and 1977). Career Irina Moiseeva and Andrei Minenkov met at the rink when they were six years old and began skating together in 1967. They had their breakthrough during the 1974–1975 season. They were third at the Soviet Championships, behind Lyudmila Pakhomova/ Aleksandr Gorshkov and Natalia Linichuk/Gennadi Karponosov, and placed just off the podium at the 1975 European Championships. András Sallay (born 15 December 1953) is a former ice dancer from Hungary. Competing with Krisztina Regőczy, he won a gold medal at the 1980 World Figure Skating Championships and a silver at that year's Winter Olympics. Krisztina Regőczy
Krisztina Regőczy (born 19 April 1955) is a former ice dancer from Hungary. Competing with András Sallay, she won the gold medal at the 1980 World Figure Skating Championships and the silver at that year's Winter Olympics. Regőczy coached in the United States for a number of years before returning to Budapest. She is the figure skating sports director for the International Skating Union. Tassilo Thierbach
Tassilo Thierbach (born 21 May 1956) is a German former pair skater. With partner Sabine Baeß, he is the 1982 World champion and a two-time European champion (1982, 1983). Life and career Baeß/Thierbach were coached by Irene Salzmann in Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Chemnitz) and represented the club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt. They were the only figure skating pair representing East Germany to win the World or European championships. Altogether, Thierbach skated with five partners: Romy Kermer (silver medallist at the Olympic Games with Rolf Österreich in 1976); Antje Heck; Petra Ronge; Sylvia Walter; and finally Sabine Baeß. In 1980 he suffered a meniscus injury to his knee, for which surgery was necessary. For this reason Baeß and Thierbach had to miss the Nationals and the Europeans in 1981. Sabine Baeß
Sabine Baeß, married name Marbach, (born 15 March 1961) is a German former pair skater. With her partner Tassilo Thierbach, she is the 1982 World champion and a two-time European champion (1982, 1983). Career Baeß/Thierbach were coached by Irene Salzmann in Karl-Marx-Stadt (today Chemnitz) and represented the club SC Karl-Marx-Stadt. They were the only figure skating pair representing East Germany to win the World or European championships. They won their first World Championship medal, a bronze, in 1979. A mistake in the short program took them out of any chance of a medal at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid however. Baeß/Thierbach had to skip the 1981 Nationals and Europeans due to Thierbach's meniscus surgery in 1980. They were however able to return to the Worlds in Hartford where they won a silver medal.
