1979 VFA Season
The 1979 Victorian Football Association season was the 98th season of the top division of the Australian rules football competition, and the 19th season of second division competition. The Division 1 premiership was won by the Coburg Football Club, after it defeated Geelong West in the Grand Final on 23 September by eight points; it was Coburg's fourth Division 1 premiership, and its first since 1928, ending a 51-year Division 1 premiership drought. The Division 2 premiership was won by Camberwell; it was the first premiership in either division ever won by the club since its admission to the Association in 1926, 53 years earlier. Coburg Football Club
The Coburg Football Club, nicknamed the Coburg Lions, is an Australian rules football club based in Coburg, a northern suburb of Melbourne, and currently playing in the Victorian Football League (VFL). It is based at Coburg City Oval since 1915, which was partly redeveloped in 2020. Coburg has historically been a proud club and has won 6 VFA/VFL premierships with the most recent premiership in 1989. Brunswick Football Club
Brunswick Football Club was an Australian rules football club which played in the Victorian Football League, Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1897 until 1991. Based in Brunswick, Victoria, for most of their time in the Association they were known as the Magpies, and wore black and white guernseys. Williamstown Football Club
The Williamstown Football Club, nicknamed The Seagulls, is an Australian rules football club based in Melbourne. The club currently competes in the men's and women's Victorian Football League and VFLW competitions. History The Williamstown Football Club was formed in 1864, making it one of the oldest football clubs in Australia. The club was initially considered a junior club, before being granted senior status in 1884. Starting in 1884, the club competed in the Victorian Football Association. Mordialloc Football Club
Mordialloc Football Netball Club, nicknamed The Bloodhounds, is an Australian rules football and netball club that currently participates in the Southern Football Netball League. Mordialloc also played in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) from 1958 until 1988. History The club is based in the Melbourne suburb of Mordialloc and started out in the Federal Football Association. Oakleigh Football Club
Oakleigh Football Club, nicknamed the Devils, was an Australian rules football club from Oakleigh which played in the VFA from 1929 until 1994. Oakleigh wore purple guernseys with a gold monogram thus giving them their original nickname the Purple and Golds. History The club was formed in 1891 and after having success in the Melbourne Districts Association (premierships in 1907, 1924, & 1928), they were one of two teams admitted into the VFA in 1929, the other being Sandringham. Yarraville Football Club
Yarraville Football Club was an Australian rules football club founded in 1903 and played in the VJFA until 1927. In 1928, the club joined the Victorian Football Association where it played until 1984 when the club went into recess. In 1996, the Kingsville Football Club in the Western Region Football League who by this time had taken over the Yarraville ground changed their name to Yarraville. The 1972 Victorian Football Association season was the 91st season of the top division of the Australian rules football competition, and the twelfth season of second division competition. The Division 1 premiership was won by the Oakleigh Football Club, after it defeated Dandenong in the Grand Final on 24 September by 44 points; it was Oakleigh's sixth and final Division 1 premiership. The Division 2 premiership was won by Geelong West, which went undefeated through the season with an overall record of 20–0, becoming the first team since in 1918 to complete a perfect season; overall, it was the club's third Division 2 premiership. Toorak Park
Toorak Park is a cricket and Australian rules football arena in the Melbourne suburb of Armadale, Victoria, Australia. It is the home ground of the Prahran Football Club and Old Xaverians Football Club of the Victorian Amateur Football Association (VAFA) and Prahran Cricket Club, which plays in the Victorian Premier Cricket competition. The current capacity of the venue is 15,000. Toorak Park opened in 1893 when it was used by Hawksburn Cricket Club (later Prahran). Kim Smith (footballer)
Kim Smith (23 June 1952 – 16 September 2009) was an Australian rules footballer who played for Prahran in the Victorian Football Association (VFA) and Melbourne in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Smith made his debut at Prahran in 1974 and finished the year as their top goal-kicker with 55 goals. The following season he played for Melbourne but could only manage four appearances. He then returned to Prahran and was their leading goal-kicker every year until his retirement in 1982, eight times in total. Renato Serafini
Renato Serafini (born 18 March 1953) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Fitzroy and Carlton in the VFL during the 1970s. Of Italian background, his parents, Carlo and Adelina arrived in Australia in 1952 from Marostica, a small town in the Veneto region of Italy. Serafini played mostly as a full-forward and topped Fitzroy's goalkicking in 1975 after kicking 34 goals in the season. Like his younger brother Laurie, he was recruited to Fitzroy from Assumption College. He crossed to Carlton in 1977 and spent two seasons with the Blues, before joining Frankston in 1979, the club's first season in the Victorian Football Association top division. Serafini was the Division 1 leading goalkicker in the 1979 home-and-away season with 95 goals, but was passed in the finals to finish third overall.
