1979 Macdonald Lassies Championship
The 1979 Macdonald Lassies Championship, the Canadian women's curling championship was held February 25 to March 2, 1979, at the Town of Mount Royal Arena in Mount Royal, Quebec. This was the last women's championship to be sponsored by Macdonald Tobacco and also the first event to feature a playoff. Team British Columbia, who was skipped by Lindsay Sparkes won the event by defeating Manitoba 7–4 in the final after also finishing first in the round robin with an 8–2 record. This was BC's fourth championship overall and the second skipped by Sparkes, who also won in . The Sparkes rink also went on to represent Canada in the inaugural Women's World Curling Championship, the 1979 Royal Bank of Scotland World Women's Curling Championship which they lost in the semifinal to eventual champion Switzerland. The 1979 Royal Bank of Scotland World Women's Curling Championship also known as the Women's World Invitational Curling Championship or The Royal Bank Ladies World Curling Championship was the first ever women's world championship. It was held at the Perth Ice Rink in Perth, Scotland from 17 March to 23 March 1979. Canada and the USA joined the nine teams that played in the 1978 European Curling Championships. The Championship was won by Switzerland, who beat Sweden 13-5 in the final. The event was billed as the women's world championship, but was not sanctioned by the International Curling Federation at the time. {{Unreferenced, date=August 2019 The Lethbridge Curling Club is an historic curling club located in Lethbridge, Alberta. The club is one of the oldest in Alberta, being founded in 1887. Back then, the club played on ponds and sloughs. A two-sheet club was set up in 1895 in the area of 4th St. and 1st Ave S. Until 1904, the club was affiliated with the Manitoba branch of the Royal Caledonian Curling Club. Alberta was not yet a province at the time. In 1910, the club was expanded to four sheets and moved to the corner of 13th St. and 4th Ave. S. The Club moved to The Civic Ice Centre, which is home to the Lethbridge Figure Skating Club in 1950 where it operated until moving to its new home in 2016.
