1979 European Amateur Boxing Championships
The Men's 1979 European Amateur Boxing Championships were held in Cologne, West Germany from May 5 to May 12, 1979. The 23rd edition of the bi-annual competition was organised by the European governing body for amateur boxing, EABA. There were 146 fighters from across many European countries participated in the competition. The Heavyweight (– 91 kilograms) and Super Heavyweight (+ 91 kilograms) categories were contested for the first time. Patrizio Oliva
Patrizio Oliva (born 28 January 1959) is an Italian former professional boxer, who won the gold medal in the light welterweight division at the 1980 Moscow Olympics as an amateur and the WBA light welterweight title as a professional. Early life Patrizio is one of seven brothers born to Rocco and Catena Oliva. Oliva was introduced to boxing through his father Rocco and his brother Mario's passion for the sport. One of his brothers, Ciro, died and Oliva dedicated a number of his fights to the memory of Ciro and also named his first son after him. Amateur career Oliva had a successful amateur career and won 93 of his 96 fights winning the Italian, European and Olympic titles. Richard Nowakowski (born 27 September 1955 in Sztum, Poland) is a retired boxer from East Germany, who won the silver medal in the men's featherweight division (– 57 kg) at the 1976 Summer Olympics in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. There he was defeated in the final by Ángel Herrera of Cuba. Viktor Leonidovich Demyanenko (russian: Виктор Леонидович Демьяненко) (born August 26, 1958 in Alma-Ata, Kazakh SSR) is a retired boxer, who represented the USSR at the 1980 Summer Olympics in Moscow, Soviet Union.
