The 1978–79 Sporting de Gijón season was the 19th season of the club in La Liga, the second in a row since the last promotion. This was the best season in the club's history, after finishing the league as runner-up and making its debut in European competitions. Sporting De Gijón
Real Sporting de Gijón, S.A.D. (), commonly known as Real Sporting, Sporting Gijón, or simply Sporting (although in an international context this can lead to confusion with Sporting Clube de Portugal) is a Spanish football club from Gijón, Principality of Asturias. Founded on 1 July 1905, it plays in La Liga Santander. Known as ''Los Rojiblancos'' because of their red and white striped jerseys, their home ground is El Molinón stadium, the oldest professional football ground in Spain, in use since at least 1908. Traditionally their red and white shirts are accompanied by blue shorts with the socks recently also being blue. Its Asturian name is ''Real Sporting de Xixón''. Héctor Horacio Leonel Scotta Guigo (born 27 September 1950) is a retired Argentine football striker. He was born in the city of San Justo in the Santa Fe Province of Argentina. Scotta is most famous for his feat of scoring 60 goals in 1975. Career Scotta started his career in 1970 with Unión de Santa Fe but after only one season he moved to Club Atlético San Lorenzo de Almagro where he was part of the Nacional winning team of 1974. Atotxa ( es, Atocha) was a association football, football stadium in San Sebastián, Spain. It was the home ground of Real Sociedad until 1993 when it was replaced by Anoeta Stadium. Roberto López Ufarte (born 19 April 1958) is a Spanish former professional footballer who played as a forward. Nicknamed ''The little devil'', most of his 15-year career was spent at Real Sociedad where he remained 12 seasons, winning four major titles including two La Liga championships. Jesús María Satrústegui Azpiroz (born 12 February 1954) is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a striker. Club career Satrústegui was born in Pamplona, Navarre. However, he played his entire professional career in the Basque Country, solely representing Real Sociedad. With the team, he scored 133 La Liga goals – a club record that stood for several decades – in 297 matches, contributing solidly to their league wins in 1981 and 1982, totalling 29 goals while playing alongside the likes of namesake Jesús María Zamora.
