1978–79 Biathlon World Cup
The 1978–79 Biathlon World Cup was a multi-race tournament over a season of biathlon, organised by the UIPMB (Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne, Union Internationale de Pentathlon Moderne et Biathlon). The season started on 10 January 1979 in Jáchymov, Czechoslovakia, and ended on 8 April 1979 in Bardufoss, Norway. It was the second season of the Biathlon World Cup, and it was only held for men. Klaus Siebert
Klaus Siebert (29 April 1955 – 24 April 2016) was a German biathlete and biathlon coach who raced for East Germany. Career At the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York, Siebert won a silver medal on the relay with the East German relay team. In the Biathlon World Championships, Siebert earned two gold medals with the East German relay team in 1978 and 1979, and a bronze medal from 1977. He also garnered three individual medals including a gold medal from the 20 km in 1979 and two bronzes from the 10 km in 1975 and 1978. After retiring from competition he became a coach. He coached in Germany, China and Belarus. He returned to his coaching role with the Belarusian national biathlon team in January 2012 after spending much of the previous year ill with cancer. However, Siebert stepped down from this role ahead of the 2014-15 season due to health issues. Siebert died in Altenberg, Germany on 24 April 2016 after a long battle with cancer, aged 60. Rudolf Horn (born 8 February 1954) is a former Austrian biathlete and cross-country skier. He competed at the 1976 Winter Olympics, the 1980 Winter Olympics and the 1984 Winter Olympics. Vladimir Alikin
Vladimir Alexandrovich Alikin (russian: Влади́мир Алекса́ндрович Али́кин; born 10 May 1957) is a Soviet former biathlete. Life and career Alikin was born in the village of Dolgy Mot near the settlement of Novoilyinsky in the Nytvensky District of the Perm Oblast. He began cross-country skiing in 1969 at Children and Youth Sport School and biathlon - in 1977. From 1979 he trained at the Armed Forces sports society in Moscow. At the 1980 Olympics in Lake Placid, New York Alikin won a gold medal with the USSR relay team and he also won a silver medal in the sprint event. In the World Championships he has four medals: bronze in 10 km sprint in 1982, and three relay bronze medals in 1979, 1981, and 1982. Kjell Søbak
Kjell Søbak (born 21 June 1957) is a Norwegian former biathlete. At the 1984 Olympics of Sarajevo, Søbak finished second with the Norwegian relay team, which consisted of himself, Eirik Kvalfoss, Rolf Storsveen, and Odd Lirhus. Anatoly Alyabyev
Anatoly Nikolayevich Alyabyev (russian: Анато́лий Никола́евич Аля́бьев; 12 December 1951 – 11 January 2022) was a Soviet biathlete. Life and career Alyabyev was born in the village of Danilkovo, Velsky District, Arkhangelsk Oblast. He initially trained at Children and Youth Sport School of Spartak in Vologda, but competed as a senior while training at the Armed Forces sports society in Leningrad. At the 1980 Olympics he was, together with Frank Ullrich the dominant biathlete taking gold medals in the 20 km and on the relay and bronze in the 10 km. Alyabyev best season came in 1980–1981, when he became second overall. Alyabyev was awarded Order of the Red Banner of Labour (1980). He graduated from Lesgaft Military Institute of Physical Culture in 1981 and defended a dissertation for the Candidate of Pedagogical Science degree in 1997. Luigi Weiss
Luigi "Gigi" Weiss (born 17 December 1951) is a former Italian biathlete and ski mountaineer. Weiss was born in Vattaro. Together with Angelo Genuin and Bruno Bonaldi, he placed first in the military team category in the 1975 Trofeo Mezzalama edition, which was carried out as the first World Championship of Skimountaineering. At the 1979 Biathlon World Championships, Weiss won bronze in the 10 km sprint. This was the first medal for an Italian at the Biathlon World Championships, and as the race also counted in the World Cup, it was also the first podium finish for an Italian in the World Cup. Odd Lirhus
Odd Lirhus (born 18 September 1956) is a former Norwegian biathlete. At the 1984 Winter Olympics in Sarajevo he won a silver medal in the relay. He also won a gold medal in the 20 km individual at the 1978 Biathlon World Championship. In addition, he won the 20 km individual in Falun in the 1983–84 season. After that season, Lirhus took a gap year as an active biathlete to be a coach for the Canadian biathlon team, intending to return to biathlon and compete at the World Championships in Holmenkollen. He did not, however, return. From 2002 to 2005, Lirhus was the head coach for Norwegian women's biathlon team. Alexander Tikhonov
Alexander Ivanovich Tikhonov (russian: Александр Иванович Тихонов; born 2 January 1947) is a former Soviet-Russian biathlete. On 23 July 2007, he was found guilty of conspiracy to commit murder and sentenced to three years of imprisonment, but he was amnestied immediately and did not spend any time in prison. Life and career Tikhonov trained at Dynamo in Novosibirsk. He won nine world championship biathlon gold medals and four Olympic gold medals. He lacks an individual Olympic gold medal in his cupboard, but took part in the gold medal relay winning teams in 1968, 1972, 1976, and 1980. He lived in Austria for several years in the early 2000s.
