1978 World University Cycling Championship
The 1978 World University Cycling Championship was the 1st Word University Cycling Championship sponsored by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). The championship was hosted by the Belgian city Antwerp. Male athletes contested a road race and the individual pursuit on the track. Road cycling The men's road race took place in Bornem in the province of Antwerp. Both the start and finish were in Bornem. The event was won by Theo de Rooij from the Netherlands who became the first World University Road Champion. Track cycling Male athletes competed on the track in the 4000 m individual pursuit. The Jean-Jacques Rebière from France won the competition and became the first World University Track Champion. World University Cycling Championships
The World University Cycling Championship is a competition sponsored by the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI), which was first held in 1978 in Antwerp, Belgium. Before 1978 there were also World University Championships, but these were not sponsored by the International University Sports Federation. The next edition will be held in Jelenia Gora, Poland in 2014. The championship last five days and could contain events in five cycling sports: road cycling (road race and time trial), track cycling, mountainbike (cross-country and marathon), BMX and Cyclo-Cross. World University Cycling Championship – Road Cycling are the world university championship races for road bicycle racing. Since 1978 the championship is sponsored by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). There competitions are sanctioned by the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI). There are three road racing disciplines, a road race, time trial, and criterium for both men and women. The criterium discipline was first introduced in the 2016 edition. Theo De Rooij
Theo de Rooij (born 25 April 1957 in Harmelen) is a retired Dutch former bicycle racer and former manager of the Rabobank cycling team - a position from which he resigned after the 2007 Tour de France. De Rooij was a professional rider from 1980 to 1990. He started his career in Belgian teams and the last eight years of his careers he served teams managed by Peter Post. He currently lives in Holten. Biography De Rooij won several stages in the Tour de Suisse, the Tour of Germany and the Ronde van Nederland. He took part in nine editions of the Tour de France. He was known for his strategic intelligence. After his professional career he became a team manager, joining Peter Post's Panasonic team. Later he would become manager of Jan Raas at Rabobank.
