1977 North American Soccer League Playoffs
The 1977 North American Soccer League playoffs began on August 10 and ended on August 28 with Soccer Bowl '77 at Civic Stadium in Portland, Oregon. 12 out of 18 teams qualified after a 26-match regular season, six from each conference. Playoff format The top three teams in each division would quality for the playoffs, similar to the 1976 playoffs. The first round and the Soccer Bowl were single games, but the division championships and conference championships were two-game series. If teams were tied at one win apiece at the conclusion of Game 2, there would be a 30-minute sudden death mini-game and a shootout if necessary. The Los Angeles Aztecs was an American professional soccer team based in Los Angeles, California that existed from 1974 to 1981. Jim Pollihan
James Pollihan is a former U.S. soccer player who was an outstanding collegiate forward with Quincy University but moved to defense as a professional. He earned fifteen caps with the U.S. national team between 1976 and 1979. Player College Pollihan starred as a forward with the Quincy University soccer team between 1972 and 1976. Quincy played in the NAIA where it dominated the men's soccer competition from the late 1960s through the 1980s. In 1970, Pollihan's first year with the team, Quincy, went to the championship game where it fell to Davis and Elkins College. Pollihan was selected to the All Tournament team. Fred Binney
Frederick Edward Binney (born 12 August 1946) is an English former professional footballer who played in the Football League for Torquay United, Exeter City, Brighton & Hove Albion, Plymouth Argyle and Hereford United, and in the North American Soccer League for the St. Louis Stars. Early career Binney was raised in the Barbican area of Plymouth. He was a prolific goalscorer in junior football whilst playing for CM Department juniors and was signed by South Western League side Launceston. He became an apprentice at Devonport Dockyard and whilst continuing to play for Launceston, also played for John Conway in the Devon Wednesday League. Raymond Leslie "Ray" Evans (born 20 September 1949) is an English former footballer who played in the position of full back in England and the United States. He played for Tottenham Hotspur, Millwall, Fulham and Stoke City. Bob Matteson is a retired American soccer player who spent his career as a defender or defensive midfielder. He spent four seasons in the North American Soccer League and earned two caps with the U.S. national team. Youth and college Matteson attended St. Mary's High School where he played on the boys' soccer team. Matteson and his teammates went undefeated during the 1969–1970 season, winning the Missouri state high school championship. In 1970, he entered St. Louis University, playing on the men's soccer team until 1973. At the time, St. Louis was the dominant college soccer team, winning the 1970, 1972 and 1973 NCAA championship.
