1974 World Lacrosse Championship
The 1974 World Lacrosse Championship was an international lacrosse tournament played at the Olympic Park Stadium, Melbourne, Australia from 30 June to 4 July 1974. It was the second World Lacrosse Championship with the first being played seven years prior. Four teams played in the 1974 championships with the United States taking out the round robin tournament defeating the other three teams that was competing in the tournament. Olympic Park Stadium (Melbourne)
Olympic Park Stadium was a multi-purpose outdoor stadium located on Olympic Boulevard in inner Melbourne. The stadium was built as an athletics training venue for the 1956 Olympics, a short distance from the MCG (Melbourne Cricket Ground), which served as the Olympic Stadium. Over the years it was the home of rugby league side, Melbourne Storm and the A-League team, Melbourne Victory; throughout its life the stadium played host to athletics. Olympic Park Stadium was located in Olympic Park, which is part of the Melbourne Sports and Entertainment Precinct. Olympic Park Stadium was demolished in 2012, and replaced with an Australian rules football ground. This new ground, Olympic Park Oval, has been used by the Collingwood Football Club for training purposes, it being adjacent to the Holden Centre. 1967 World Lacrosse Championship
The 1967 World Lacrosse Championship was the third World Lacrosse Championship for men's field lacrosse teams and was played in Toronto, Canada during May 1967. The United States won the round robin tournament. The United States were represented by their National Champions the Mount Washington Lacrosse Club from Baltimore. They beat England, Canada, and Australia. Canada was represented by box lacrosse players from the Peterborough Petes and Green Gaels. 1978 World Lacrosse Championship
The 1978 World Lacrosse Championship was the third edition of the international men's lacrosse tournament. The event took place at Edgeley Park in Stockport, England under the auspices of the International Lacrosse Federation. Four teams competed in the tournament: Australia, Canada, England, and the United States. Canada defeated the United States 17-16 in overtime in the final to win the tournament. Overview In the finals, Canada captured the 1978 World Championship with a shocking 17-16 overtime victory over the United States team. The underdog label was given to the Canadian team due to their lack of field lacrosse experience, and also following a round-robin American annihilation of the Canadians, 28-4. Lacrosse is a team sport played with a lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball. World Lacrosse Championship
The World Lacrosse Championship (WLC) is the international men's field lacrosse championship organized by World Lacrosse that occurs every four years. The WLC began before any international lacrosse organization had been formed. It started as a four-team invitational tournament which coincided with Canada's centennial lacrosse celebration in 1967. Canada, the United States, Australia, and England participated. Seven years later, Australia celebrated its lacrosse centenary and another four-team invitational tournament was held between the same countries. After that tournament in 1974, the first international governing body for men's lacrosse was formed, the International Lacrosse Federation (ILF). The ILF merged with the women's governing body in 2008 to form the Federation of International Lacrosse, which changed its name to World Lacrosse in 2019. United States Men's National Lacrosse Team
The United States men's national lacrosse team has won ten of thirteen World Lacrosse Championships, the most recent in 2018.
