David Jenkins (sprinter)
David Andrew Jenkins (born 25 May 1952) is a former World ranked no.1 400m track and field sprinter who also ran other sprint distances. He is, statistically, the highest ranking Scottish sprinter in history, above 1980 Olympic 100m champion Alan Wells. He was part of the UK relay team which won a silver medal at the 1972 Munich Summer Olympics. Anabolic steroids were banned from athletics in 1976, and Jenkins has said that he began using steroids around then; although his times slowed from this point due in part to his increased propensity for injury. He was a finalist in the 1976 and 1980 Olympics 400m. He received a 7-year prison sentence in the 1980s for drug smuggling but was able to serve only 10-1/2 months by becoming an informant. Harald Norpoth (born 22 August 1942) is a West German former middle and long distance runner. Brendan Foster
Sir Brendan Foster (born 12 January 1948) is a British former long-distance runner, athletics commentator and road race organiser, who founded the Great North Run, one of the sport's most high profile half-marathon races. As an athlete, he won the bronze medal in the 10,000 metres at the 1976 Summer Olympics, and the gold medal in the 5,000 metres at the 1974 European Championships and the 10,000 metres at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. The 5000 metres or 5000-metre run is a common long-distance running event in track and field, approximately equivalent to or . It is one of the track events in the Olympic Games and the World Championships in Athletics, run over laps of a standard track. The same distance in road running is called a 5K run; referring to the distance in metres rather than kilometres serves to disambiguate the two events. The 5000 m has been present on the Olympic programme since 1912 for men and since 1996 for women. Prior to 1996, women had competed in an Olympic 3000 metres race since 1984. Klaus-Peter Justus (born 1 July 1951 in Königsee, Thuringia) is a retired East German middle distance runner who specialized in the 1500 metres. Paul-Heinz Wellmann (born 31 March 1952, in Haiger) is a former West German middle-distance runner who specialized in the 1500 metres. As a teenager he won the silver medal at the 1970 European Junior Championships. He then finished seventh at the 1971 European Championships, the 1972 Summer Olympics and the 1974 European Championships. He then won the gold medal at the 1976 European Indoor Championships, the bronze medal at the 1976 Summer Olympics and the silver medal at the 1977 European Indoor Championships At the European Indoor Championships he had previously won three medals in relay races: a bronze medal in 4 × 800 m in 1971, and gold medals in 4 x 720 m in 1972 and 1973. Frank Clement (athlete)
Francis James "Frank" Clement (born 26 April 1952 in Glasgow) is a retired Scottish athlete who competed in the 1500 metres. He was a member of Bellahouston Harriers and a graduate of Strathclyde University. Clement was an Olympic 1500 m finalist coming fifth at the 1976 Games in Montreal in a time of 3:39.65. He was also fourth in the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. In 1973 Clement achieved success in the European Cup final which he won in a time of 3:40.8, defeating future Olympic bronze medalist Paul-Heinz Wellmann and 1974 European champion Klaus-Peter Justus. He also won the 1973 World Student Games (Universiade) 1500m in a time of 3:42.32 defeating the top American runner Tony Waldrop. 1500 Metres
The 1500 metres or 1,500-metre run (typically pronounced 'fifteen-hundred metres') is the foremost middle distance track event in athletics. The distance has been contested at the Summer Olympics since 1896 and the World Championships in Athletics since 1983. It is equivalent to 1.5 kilometers or approximately miles. The event is closely associated with its slightly longer cousin, the mile race, from which it derives its nickname "the metric mile". The demands of the race are similar to that of the 800 metres, but with a slightly higher emphasis on aerobic endurance and a slightly lower sprint speed requirement. The 1500 metre race is predominantly aerobic, but anaerobic conditioning is also required. Dieter Fromm (born 21 April 1948) is a retired East German middle-distance runner who specialized in the 800 metres. He held the indoor 800 m world record for over ten years. His career ended abruptly in 1976 when, in a race ahead of the 1976 Summer Olympics, for which Fromm was qualified, another runner tread on and damaged his achilles tendon.
