American Samoa ( sm, Amerika Sāmoa, ; also ' or ') is an unincorporated territory of the United States located in the South Pacific Ocean, southeast of the island country of Samoa. Tago Ativalu (died 3 May 1985) was an American Samoan politician. He served in the Senate from 1973 to 1984. Biography Ativalu worked as a police officer and became a civil servant in the Department of Public Works. He also served in the United States Marine Corps Reserve and was a member of the Veterans Association. He was elected to the Senate of the Thirteenth Legislature in 1972. He was re-elected in 1974, 1976, 1978, 1980 and 1982. During his time in the Senate he served as chair of the Samoan Affairs Committee and Vice Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee. John Morse Haydon (January 27, 1920 – April 18, 1991) was the governor of the American Samoa from 1969 to 1974. Haydon attended the University of Washington. He served as a First Lieutenant in the United States Air Force during World War II and flew 35 combat missions over Germany. Haydon was commissioner of the Seattle Port Commission from 1960 to 1969, and president in 1963, 1968, and 1969. He was a member of the Governor's Advisory Council on Fisheries from 1965 to 1967, and on Commerce and Economic Development from 1965 to 1969. WVUV (648 AM) was a radio station licensed to serve the community of Leone, American Samoa. The station, established in 1942, was owned and operated by South Seas Broadcasting, Inc., when its broadcast license was cancelled in 2011. WVUV was a sister station to NBC TV station KKHJ-LP, which went by the WVUV-LP callsign until 2008. Programming Before signing off forever, WVUV broadcast a hot adult contemporary music format to American Samoa area and other neighboring islands. History After being deleted from the FCC database in January 2005 after a period of inactivity, the station was re-licensed and reassigned the WVUV call letters by the Federal Communications Commission on May 5, 2006. The American Samoan Legislature or Fono has two chambers, the House of Representatives and the Senate, which has a directly elected head of government, the Governor of American Samoa. The House of Representatives has 21 members, all elected for a two-year term. Fourteen of them are from single-seat districts, six are from dual-seat districts, and one is elected by a public meeting on Swain Island. The Senate has 18 members, elected for a four-year term by and from the chiefs of the islands. The Governor and their deputy, the Lieutenant Governor, are elected to a four-year term with a limit of two terms as governor. Although individuals can and do affiliate with political parties, elections are held on a non-partisan basis, and candidates run without party labels.
