1971–72 FIBA European Champions Cup
The 1971–72 FIBA European Champions Cup was the 15th installment of the European top-tier level professional basketball club competition FIBA European Champions Cup (now called EuroLeague). The Final was held at the Yad Eliyahu Arena, in Tel Aviv, Israel, on March 23, 1972. It was won by Ignis Varese, who defeated Jugoplastika, by a result of 70–69. Competition system * 23 teams (European national domestic league champions, plus the then current title holders), playing in a tournament system, played knock-out rounds on a home and away basis. The aggregate score of both games decided the winner. * The 8 teams qualified for the Quarterfinals were divided into two groups of four. BC Academic Metropol Region ( bg, БК "Академик" Метропол-Рийджън) is a reestablished Bulgarian professional basketball club based in the capital Sofia. In April 2022, Academic has been reborn and rebranded by the new owners, the german-bulgarian Ex-professional basketball player Viktor Vladov and Georgi Petrov. Founded in 1947 as part of the Academic Sofia sports club, they have won the championship of Bulgaria 26 times, won the Bulgarian Cup 11 times and won the Bulgarian Super Cup 1 time. Flamingo's Haarlem
Flamingo's Haarlem was a professional basketball team based in Haarlem, Netherlands. Flamingo's played in the Eredivisie from 1960 till 1983, excluding the 1961–62 season. The team won the Dutch championship and NBB Cup four times. The Flamingo's also played at the highest European stage many times: in the 1966–67, 1968–69, 1970–71, 1971–72 and 1973–74 season the team did at least play in the qualifying round. The team was founded in 1954 as Black Pirates by baseball players who before played for several different teams. In its first year they were the city champions of Haarlem and finished third in the national league. The games were played in the Krelagehuis, despite there being no changing rooms and showers. Due to name sponsorship reasons, the former name of the club was Benetton Fribourg. The club is a seventeen-time Swiss Basketball League champion.
