John Newcombe
John David Newcombe AO OBE (born 23 May 1944) is an Australian former professional tennis player. He is one of the few men to have attained a world No. 1 ranking in both singles and doubles. At the majors, he won seven singles titles, a former record 17 men's doubles titles, and two mixed doubles titles. He also contributed to five Davis Cup titles for Australia during an age when the Davis Cup was deemed as significant as the majors. ''Tennis'' magazine rated him the 10th best male player of the period 1965–2005. Biography Newcombe played several sports as a boy before devoting himself to tennis. Newcombe's powerful serve and volley was the backbone of his attacking game. He frequently came up with a second-serve ace. Bob "Nails" Carmichael (4 July 1940 – 18 November 2003) was an Australian tennis player and coach. As a player, Carmichael won one singles title and 12 doubles titles, and achieved a top-ten ranking in 1970. Partnering Allan Stone, he reached the doubles final of the 1975 Australian Open. Lance Lumsden
Lancelot Lumsden (30 October 1939 – 18 June 2011) was a Jamaican former professional tennis player. Biography Born in Buff Bay, Lumsden played collegiate tennis in the United States at Southern Illinois University Carbondale in the early 1960s. He went on to compete on the international circuit and featured in the main draws of all four grand slam tournaments, which included a match up against number one seed Rod Laver at the 1968 French Open. Lumsden was a Davis Cup representative for the Caribbean/West Indies and appeared in a total of seven ties. Four of those came against the United States and he twice faced Arthur Ashe in singles. His most famous win came against Ashe in doubles, when the Caribbean/West Indies hosted the Americans in Kingston in 1966. John Bartlett (born ''John David Bartlett''; 17 March 1948) is an Australian former tennis player who was a Davis Cup member and top ten player, in Australia in the 1970s. Alvin Gardiner (born 11 February 1951) is a former professional tennis player from Australia. Career Gardiner was a quarter-finalist in the men's doubles at the 1968 Australian Open with Ross Case. He continued to compete in every Australian Open until 1973, when he began to suffer a series of injuries and illnesses. It started with a season ending collarbone injury, a break that required a bone graft operation in London. When he returned to action he caught glandular fever, in August 1974 he won the Exmouth Open, and then midway through the season he pulled a back muscle. Ion Țiriac (; born 9 May 1939), also known as the "Brașov Bulldozer", is a Romanian businessman and former professional tennis and ice hockey player. He has been president of the Romanian Tennis Federation. A former singles top 10 player on the ATP Tour, Tiriac was the winner of one grand slam title, the 1970 French Open in men's doubles. Țiriac was the first man to play against a woman and defeat her, in a sanctioned tennis tournament (against Abigail Maynard, in 1975).
