1970 Espirito Santo Trophy
The 1970 Espirito Santo Trophy took place 30 September – 3 October at the Negro course at the R.S.H.E. Club de Campo in Madrid, Spain. Several years later, in the late 1970s, the course became home of the Club de Campo Villa de Madrid, while the R.S.H.E Club moved to another location, north of the Madrid city. It was the fourth women's golf World Amateur Team Championship for the Espirito Santo Trophy. The tournament was a 72-hole stroke play team event with 22 three-woman teams. The best two scores for each round counted towards the team total. The United States team won the Trophy, defending their title from two years ago and winning their third consecutive title, beating France by one stroke. France took the silver medal while South Africa, seven strokes further behind, for the first time on the podium in the championship, took the bronze. Teams 22 teams contested the event. Catherine Lacoste
Catherine Lacoste (born 27 June 1945) is a French amateur golfer and the only player who has won the U.S. Women's Open as an amateur. Early life She was born and grew up in Paris, France, with her parents, René Lacoste and Simone de la Chaume and three older brothers. Her family spent many holidays in the coast resort area of Saint-Jean-de-Luz, in France close to the Spanish border, near the Golf de Chantaco. Liv Wollin (née Forsell) (born 17 April 1945) is a Swedish professional golfer, who is regarded as having been one of the best Swedish female amateur players ever. Early life Wollin grew up in Lidingö outside Stockholm, Sweden, as the only girl among five siblings. Her parents were Jacob Forsell and Mette, nee Grut, and they were not golfers. She started out golf in 1958 as a caddie at Lidingö Golf Club close to their house. With few girls playing the game in those days, she usually played with boys. Cristina Marsans Astoreca (9 May 1946 – 26 August 2018) also known as Marquesa de Artasona, was a Spanish golfer, best known for popularizing competitive golf in Spain. Early life Marsans was the daughter of Enrique Marsans, founder of the first travel agency in Spain. Sally Little
Sally Little (born 12 October 1951) is a South African-born professional golfer. She became a member of the LPGA Tour in 1971 and won 15 LPGA Tour events, including two major championship, during her career. In 2016, she became the first female golfer from South Africa inducted into the South African Hall of Fame. Personal life Little was born in Cape Town. She became a United States citizen in August 1982. Julia A. Greenhalgh (later Merrill, born 6 January 1941) was an English amateur golfer. She was runner-up in the 1978 Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship. She won the Ladies' British Open Amateur Stroke Play Championship in 1974 and 1975 and the English Women's Amateur Championship in 1966 and 1979. She played in the Curtis Cup five times, in 1964, 1970, 1974, 1976 and 1978. Dinah Lillianne Henson ( Oxley, 17 October 1948 – 30 April 2020) was an English amateur golfer. She won the Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship in 1970. Brigitte Varangot (1 May 1940 – 12 October 2007) was a French amateur golfer. Early life Varangot was born in Biarritz in the French Basque Country and was a self-taught golfer, who did not take many lessons and did not practice a lot. Lally Segard (also known as Vicomtesse de Saint Sauveur) (1921–2018) became her mentor. Varangot and Segard came to win several foursomes tournaments in the 1960s.
