1969 Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship
The 1969 Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship was the 75th staging of the Kilkenny Senior Hurling Championship since its establishment by the Kilkenny County Board in 1887. The championship began on 8 June 1969 and ended on 19 April 1970. Rower-Inistioge were the defending champions, however, they were defeated by Galmoy in the second round. On 19 April 1970, James Stephens won the championship after an 8–05 to 2–07 defeat of Fenians in the final. It was their third championship title overall and their first title since 1937. Format change At the Kilkenny County Convention on 24 January 1969, it was decided to change the format of the championship by introducing a losers' group for teams defeated in the first round. The winners of the losers' group entered the championship proper at the semi-final stage. Ballyragget
Ballyragget () is a small town on the river Nore in the north of County Kilkenny in Ireland. Ballyragget is on the N77 north of Kilkenny. As of the 2016 census, it had a population of 1,082 people. Toponymy The name 'Ragget' is Anglo-Norman in origin, and denotes a once-prominent Norman landowner Richard le Ragget who held these lands in the early part of the 13th century. Older names of the settlement include Donoughmore (or Donaghmore; ga, Domhnach Mór "large church") and the even more ancient Tullabarry ( ga, Tualach Bare) - the name of a Celtic or possibly pre-Celtic tribe which held their seat in the vicinity. There is some debate as to the meaning of Donoughmore. Coon GAA
Coon GAA was a Gaelic Athletic Association club located in Coon, County Kilkenny, Ireland. The club was primarily concerned with the game of hurling. History Hurling had been played in the Coon area since the early 1940s when the arrival of a new schoolteacher resulted in a minor team being established. A new curate arrived in the parish in 1947 and, under his influence, Coon GAA Club was established in 1948. After losing Kilkenny JHC finals to Mooncoin in 1961 and Thomastown in 1962, Coon finally made the breakthrough by capturing the title in 1967. This victory earned promotion to the Kilkenny SHC. Coon lined out in the top flight until regrading to the newly created Kilkenny IHC in 1973. The decision was a successful one as they claimed the title that year. Coon had returned to the junior ranks by the end of the 1970s. Coon amalgamated with the Muckalee/Ballyfoyle Rangers club in 1982, resulting in the creation of the St. Martin's club. Erin's Own GAA (Kilkenny)
Erin's Own Gaelic Athletic Association was founded in 1885 and since then has been the main sporting organization in the Castlecomer area in County Kilkenny, Ireland. Erin's Own fielded teams in 11 different grades of hurling and in 7 grades of gaelic football in 2006, and is currently undertaking major development at its new ground, Canon Kearns Park. With a membership of about 20 adults and about 100 youths the club is in the enviable position of having two properties, the first, The Prince Grounds, in the town, and the second, Canon Kearns Park, on the outskirts of the town, towards Kilkenny. History Erin's Own has enjoyed senior status since 1958, and while the Senior hurling title remains elusive, hundreds of players and supporters have derived great enjoyment from the club over the years.
