Gaelic Athletic Association
The Gaelic Athletic Association (GAA; ga, Cumann Lúthchleas Gael ; CLG) is an Irish international amateur sporting and cultural organisation, focused primarily on promoting indigenous Gaelic games and pastimes, which include the traditional Irish sports of hurling, camogie, Gaelic football, Gaelic handball and rounders. Kilkenny Intermediate Football Championship
The Kilkenny Intermediate Football Championship (also known for sponsorship reasons as the ''JJ Kavanagh & Sons Kilkenny Intermediate Football Championship'') is an annual Gaelic football competition which has been organised by the Kilkenny County Board of the Gaelic Athletic Association since 1990, for the second-tier football teams in County Kilkenny, Ireland. The series of games are played during the autumn and winter months with the county final played in December. The championship has historically been played on a straight knockout basis whereby once a team loses they are eliminated from the series. The winning club in the Kilkenny IFC progresses to the Leinster Intermediate Club Football Championship, the winners of which compete for the All-Ireland Intermediate Club Football Championship. John Donnelly (hurler)
John Donnelly (born 4 March 1998) is an Irish hurler who plays for Kilkenny Intermediate Championship club Thomastown and at inter-county level with the Kilkenny senior hurling team. He usually lines out as a centre-forward. Playing career DCU Dóchas Éireann As a student at Dublin City University, Donnelly immediately became involved in hurling and joined the college's freshers' hurling team in his first year. On 2 March 2017, he was selected at full-forward when Dublin City University faced the University of Limerick in the All-Ireland freshers' final. Donnelly was held scoreless but ended the game with a winners' medal following the 1-15 to 1-13 extra-time victory. Cha Whelan
Jarlath "Cha" Whelan (7 September 1939 – 22 March 1996) was an Irish hurler who played as a full-back for the Kilkenny and London senior teams. Born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Whelan first played hurling without success during his school days. Although never playing minor hurling at inter-county level, he arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-one when he made his senior debut in the 1960-61 National Hurling League. Whelan later played with London, but returned to Kilkenny and made several cameo appearances over the following four years, winning one All-Ireland medal and one Leinster medal on the field of play. Tom Walsh (Thomastown Hurler)
Tom Walsh (born 1944 in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Ireland) is an Irish former sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Thomastown and was a member of the Kilkenny senior inter-county team from 1963 until 1967. Playing career Club Walsh played hurling with his local club in Thomastown and enjoyed some success during a brief playing career. He first came to prominence as a member of the Thomastown under-14 team in the 1950s. It was a glorious period of success at under-age level as the club won five under-14 championship titles in succession. Walsh was involved in four of these. The sixties saw Walsh join the club's senior hurling team, however, he never won a senior county title. Ollie Walsh
Patrick Oliver Walsh (13 July 1937 – 9 March 1996) was an Irish hurler and hurling manager. His career included All-Ireland Championship victories as a player and later as a manager with the Kilkenny senior hurling team. After beginning his career at club level with Thomastown, Walsh joined the Kilkenny minor team as a 15-year-old in 1953 and won a Leinster Minor Championship in 1955. After a brief stint with the junior side, he was promoted to the Kilkenny senior team in 1956. From his debut, Walsh was ever-present as a goalkeeper and made a total of 42 championship appearances in a career that ended with his last game in 1972. During that time he was part of five All-Ireland Championship-winning teams – in 1957, 1963, 1967, 1969 and 1972. Peter Prendergast (hurler)
Peter Prendergast (1924 - 14 July 1991) was an Irish hurler who played as a centre-back for the Kilkenny senior team. Born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Prendergast first arrived on the inter-county scene when he first linked up with the Kilkenny senior team, making his debut in the 1947 championship. Prendergast was a regular member of the team over the next few years. During that time he won one All-Ireland medal and two Leinster medals. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. Prendergast also represented the Leinster inter-provincial team, however, he never won a Railway Cup medal. At club level he won one championship medal with Thomastown. Dick O'Hara
Dick O’Hara (born 28 May 1957) is a retired Irish sportsperson. He played hurling with his local club Thomastown and was a member of the Kilkenny senior inter-county team in the 1970s and 1980s. He is regarded as one of Kilkenny's greatest-ever players. Playing career Club O’Hara played hurling and Gaelic football with his local Thomastown club. After much success at various juvenile levels he became a key member of the club's minor team in both codes. In 1973 he won the first of three consecutive minor county football titles. He also added a minor county hurling title to his collection in 1975. O'Hara later enjoyed much more success with the club's senior football team. Tommy Maher
Monsignor Thomas Maher (25 April 1922 – 25 March 2015) was an Irish Catholic priest and Irish Hurler who played as left wing-forward for the Kilkenny senior team. Born in Gowran, County Kilkenny, Maher first played competitive hurling during his schooling at St. Kieran's College. He arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of twenty-three when he first linked up with the Kilkenny senior team. He made his senior debut during the 1945 championship. Maher had a brief inter-county career and won one Leinster medal as a non-playing substitute. He was an All-Ireland runner-up on one occasion. At club level Maher had a brief career with Castle Rovers and Thomastown. In retirement from playing Maher became involved in team management and coaching. Paudie Lannon
Paudie Lannon (born 1956) is an Irish retired hurler who played as a midfielder for the Kilkenny senior team. Born in Thomastown, County Kilkenny, Lannon first arrived on the inter-county scene at the age of sixteen when he first linked up with the Kilkenny minor team, before later joining the under-21 side. He made his senior debut during the 1981 championship. Lannon enjoyed a brief inter-county career, during which time he won one All-Ireland medal and one National Hurling League medal. Dan Kennedy (hurler, Born 1925)
Daniel Kennedy (1925 – 6 February 1976) was an Irish sportsman. He is best known as a hurler for several teams Thomastown, Dicksboro and Bennettsbridge clubs and was a member of the Kilkenny senior inter-county team in the 1940s and 1950s. Dan Kennedy captained Kilkenny in 1947. Playing career Club Kennedy first played hurling with his local Thomastown club and enjoyed some success. In 1946 it was with Thomastown that he won his first county title. Kennedy later joined the Dicksboro club and won a second county medal in 1950, however, it was with the famous Bennettsbridge club that he became really successful.
