1969 Anglo-Italian League Cup
The 1969 Anglo-Italian League Cup was a football cup competition held between clubs in England and Italy won by Swindon Town. It was the inaugural Anglo-Italian League Cup competition. Background The origin of the Anglo-Italian League Cup (also known as the ''Anglo-Italian Cup Winners' Cup'' and billed on the match programme as the ''International League Cup Winners' Cup'') was to reward Swindon Town with European football in lieu of their ineligibility for the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup following their victory in the 1968–69 League Cup, beating Arsenal in the final. The Football League Cup had been changed in 1967 so the winner would be awarded a place in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup; however, teams outside the First Division were not permitted in the competition. Queens Park Rangers won that year's final but were omitted from the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup as they were in the Third Division. Football League First Division
The Football League First Division was a division of the Football League in England from 1888 until 2004. It was the top division in the English football league system from the season 1888–89 until 1991–92, a century in which the First Division's winning club became English men's football champions. The First Division contained between 12 and 24 clubs, playing each other home and away in a double round robin. The competition was based on two points for a win from 1888 until the increase to three points for a win in 1981. After the creation of the Premier League, the name First Division was given to the second-tier division (from 1992). The name ceased to exist after the 2003–04 First Division season. Alberto Ginulfi
Alberto Ginulfi (30 November 1941 – 6 September 2023) was an Italian professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Career Ginulfi played for 12 seasons (188 games) in the Serie A for Italian clubs A.S. Roma, Hellas Verona F.C., and ACF Fiorentina, winning two Coppa Italia and an Anglo-Italian Cup with Roma. Ginulfi was one of the very few goalkeepers who could boast that he saved a penalty kick by Brazilian former footballer Pelé - widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time. Ginulfi saved the penalty in a friendly match between Roma and Santos on 3 March 1972. Style of play Ginulfi was considered an extremely consistent and modern goalkeeper for his time. Peter Noble
Peter Noble (19 August 1944 – 6 May 2017) was an English footballer who played forward. Noble began his career with Consett where he combined a career in painting and decorating with football. After an impressive season with a record breaking Consett side he was signed for nearby giants Newcastle United where he made 25 appearances. Noble signed for Swindon Town from Newcastle United in January 1968 for £8,000 and made his debut as a substitute in a 3–0 win over Walsall at the beginning of February. In the following season he scored 16 league goals and was the club's top scorer, but his main contribution was to the successful League Cup campaign. He played in every match en route to the Final. Noble scored four goals, including the extra time winner in the semi-final replay versus Burnley. He only discovered five years later that he had suffered a broken shoulder blade in that game.
