1968 Paris Open
The 1968 French Covered Court Championships was a tennis tournament played on indoor carpet courts. It was the last edition of the French Covered Court Championships before it was taken over by the Paris Open. It took place at the Palais omnisports de Paris-Bercy in Paris, France, and was held from 12 February through 18 February 1968. Milan Holeček and Nell Truman won the singles titles. Carpet Court
A carpet court is a type of tennis court. The International Tennis Federation describes the surface as a "textile or polymeric material supplied in rolls or sheets of finished product." It is one of the fastest court types, second only to grass courts. The use of carpet courts in ATP Tour competitions ended in 2009. In women's tennis, no WTA Tour tournaments have used carpet courts since the last edition of the Tournoi de Québec in 2018. ATP Challenger and ITF circuit level tournaments with carpet courts continue to exist up to the present (2022). Types There are two types of carpet court. The most common outdoor version consists of artificial turf with a sand in-fill. This type of carpet court became popular in the 1980s in British and Asian tennis clubs for recreational play as they were easier and cheaper to maintain than grass courts. Janine Lieffrig (born 12 April 1938) is a French former tennis player. Lieffrig reached the doubles final at the 1965 Wimbledon Championships and the 1965 French Championships with compatriot Françoise Dürr. Ismail El Shafei ( ar, إسماعيل الشافعي) (born 15 November 1947) is an Egyptian former professional tennis player and president of the Egyptian Tennis Federation. He is currently a member of the board of directors of the International Tennis Federation and is chairman of the ITF Junior Circuit. He won six career singles titles and reached eleven finals. In doubles, he won nine career titles. Career El Shafei played his first tournament in March 1962 at the Egyptian Championships losing in straight sets to Italian player Giuseppe Merlo in the round of 32. Évelyne Terras (25 September 1944 – 24 September 2012) was a French tennis player who was active in the 1960s and 1970s. Career In 1967, she teamed with Lorraine Coghlan in the doubles' event of the Australian Championship, losing the final in straight sets to Lesley Turner Bowrey and Judy Tegart. This made her the first female French player to reach the final of an Australian Open event. Her best results in a singles' event at a Grand Slam tournament was reaching the third round of the 1967 French Championships, losing to Helga Schultze. She reached the second round of the singles event at the Wimbledon Championships between 1967 and 1970. Paris Masters
The Paris Masters is an annual tennis tournament for male professional players held in Paris, France. It is played indoors at the AccorHotels Arena, in the neighborhood of Bercy. The event is part of the ATP Tour Masters 1000 on the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) Tour. The tournament evolved from the French Covered Court Championships. In the open era it was held at the Stade Pierre de Coubertin until 1982. In 1989 it was upgraded to become one of the Grand Prix Tour (Grand Prix Super Series). The event is usually the final tournament on the tour before the season-ending ATP Finals. Gerald Battrick (27 May 1947 – 26 November 1998) was a Welsh tennis player who reached as high as No. 3 in Britain (and world No. 53), winning at least 6 titles. Personal life Gerald Battrick was born on 27 May 1947 in Bridgend, Glamorgan, where his father was the Medical Officer. Monique Salfati
Monique Salfati (born 18 May 1945) is a French former professional tennis player. She was also known as Monique Di Maso during her tennis career. Salfati, a two-time French national champion from Cannes, played Federation Cup tennis for France in 1967 and 1968, then appeared in the same tournament with Italy in 1974, following her marriage to Italian tennis player Gaetano Di Maso. She featured in a Federation Cup quarter-final for both countries. Her best performance in a grand slam tournament was a third round appearance at the 1965 Wimbledon Championships.
