1965 Rand Grand Prix
The 8th Rand Grand Prix was a motor race, run to Formula One-style rules, held on 4 December 1965 at Kyalami, South Africa. The race was run over 50 laps of the circuit, and was won by Australian driver Jack Brabham in a Brabham BT11. The Formula One rules for 1966 were to dispense with the old 1.5-litre engines in favour of 3-litre engines. The South African Drivers' Championship had already been run to these rules throughout 1965, so this race was the first in which some of the established drivers and teams from the World Championship competed under the new rules, while the local drivers already had experience with them. Rand Grand Prix
The Rand Grand Prix was a motor race held at various circuits in South Africa. The first event took place in 1937 but it was not held regularly until the 1960s, when it was run to Formula One rules and formed part of the non-Championship calendar. At that time it represented an annual warm-up race before the South African Grand Prix. Rob Walker Racing Team
Rob Walker Racing Team was a privateer team in Formula One during the 1950s and 1960s. Founded by Johnnie Walker heir Rob Walker (1917–2002) in 1953, the team became F1's most successful privateer in history, being the first and (along with FISA team) only entrant to win a World Championship Formula One Grand Prix without ever building their own car. Beginnings Born in 1917, the 35-year-old Rob Walker founded his team in 1953, debuting in the Lavant Cup Formula 2 race, entering a Connaught for driver Tony Rolt, where he achieved a third place. The next race, at Snetterton, Eric Thompson was the first winner with a Rob Walker car. David Prophet
David Prophet (9 October 1937 – 29 March 1981) was a British racing driver from England. He participated in two Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 28 December 1963. He scored no championship points. He finished sixth in the non-Championship 1963 Rand Grand Prix. Jackie Pretorius
Jacobus "Jackie" Pretorius (22 November 1934 – 30 March 2009) was a racing driver from South Africa. He participated in four Formula One World Championship Grands Prix, debuting on 1 January 1965, and scoring no championship points. Pretorius competed in Formula One at national level in his home country of South Africa, enjoying some success throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s. After racing a Lotus and a Lola, he won two races in 1971 driving a Brabham. Jackie Pretorius died in Johannesburg aged 74, on 30 March 2009, after being in a coma for three weeks. Joakim Bonnier (31 January 1930 – 11 June 1972) was a Swedish sportscar racing and Formula One driver who raced for various teams. He was the first Swede to both enter and win a Formula One Grand Prix. Early life Jo Bonnier was born in Stockholm, to the wealthy Bonnier family. His father, Gert, was a professor of genetics at the University of Stockholm, while many members of his extensive family were in the publishing business. He spoke six languages and, although his parents hoped that he would become a doctor, for a while it was his aspiration to enter the family publishing business. He attended Oxford University for a year, studying languages, then went to Paris, France, planning to learn about publishing. Ambraüsus "Brausch" Niemann (born 7 January 1939 in Durban) is a former racing driver from South Africa. Bob Anderson (racing Driver)
Robert Hugh Fearon Anderson (19 May 1931 – 14 August 1967) was a British Grand Prix motorcycle road racer and racing driver. He competed in Grand Prix motorcycle racing from 1958 to 1960 and in Formula One from 1963 to the 1967 seasons. He was also a two-time winner of the North West 200 race in Northern Ireland. Anderson was one of the last independent privateer drivers in Formula One before escalating costs made it impossible to compete without sponsorship. Racing career Motorcycle racing Anderson was born in Hendon in the north of London and later lived in Haynes, Bedfordshire. He trained as an agricultural engineer though, left after a year and got a job as a mechanic in a local machinery dealer. Tony Jefferies (racing Driver)
Tony Jefferies (24 April 1948 – 29 December 2021) was a British Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. He won the 1971 Isle of Man TT 350cc Junior TT. He won two more times at the TT in the 750cc Production class. Jefferies died on 29 December 2021, at the age of 73. His son David Jefferies Allan David Jefferies (18 September 1972 – 29 May 2003) was an English professional motorcycle racer. He died after crashing during practice for the 2003 Isle of Man TT races. Clive Puzey
Clive Puzey (born 11 July 1941) is a former racing driver from Rhodesia. He began taking part in the South African Formula One Championship in 1963 with a Lotus 18/21, finishing seventh in the Rand Grand Prix the following year. He was born in Bulawayo. Puzey's only Formula One World Championship Grand Prix attempt came when he entered the 1965 South African Grand Prix with his Lotus-Climax, but he failed to pre-qualify. He was one of only three drivers from Rhodesia (modern-day Zimbabwe) to enter a World Championship Formula One race. He continued to race in the South African Formula One Championship until 1969, scoring three podiums in 1966. After his racing career ended, Puzey ran a garage in his home town of Bulawayo until 2000. Louis Douglas Serrurier (9 December 1920 in Germiston – 4 June 2006) was a racing driver and racing car constructor from South Africa. He participated in 3 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix in the 1960s, only racing in the South African Grand Prix event, debuting on 29 December 1962. He scored no championship points. Racing car constructor Serrurier built a series of racing cars under the name of LDS (automobile), LDS, after his initials. The first was based on a Cooper Car Company, Cooper, and later cars were based on Brabhams. The cars were raced mainly by Serrurier himself, and Sam Tingle.
