Elections were held in the Australian state of Victoria on 27 June 1964 to elect the 66 members of the state's Legislative Assembly and 17 members of the 34-member Legislative Council. The Liberal and Country Party (LCP) government of Premier Henry Bolte won a fourth term in office. Victorian Legislative Assembly
The Victorian Legislative Assembly is the lower house of the bicameral Parliament of Victoria in Australia; the upper house being the Victorian Legislative Council. Both houses sit at Parliament House in Spring Street, Melbourne. The presiding officer of the Legislative Assembly is the Speaker. There are presently 88 members of the Legislative Assembly elected from single-member divisions. Bill Galvin (Australian Politician)
Leslie William Galvin (30 April 1903 – 1 July 1966) was an Australian politician. He was a Labor Party member of the Victorian Legislative Assembly for Bendigo from 1945 to 1955 when he was defeated at the state election, then regained the seat in 1958 until 1964. Galvin was born in the Sydney suburb of Woollahra, and was educated at Petersham Commercial School until his family moved to Melbourne, where he continued his education at Scotch College. Jim McCabe (politician)
James Edmund McCabe (7 October 1922 – 24 January 2019) was an Australian politician. Early life He was born in Nhill to farmer Roy Clifton McCabe and schoolteacher Margaret Maud Renkin, and was educated at local state schools. He became a stock and station agent, and also worked as a butcher at Dimboola before becoming a farmer at Gerung Gerung. During World War II he served with the Australian Imperial Force in the Middle East and Borneo, and on 26 February 1947 he married Florence Hope Eastick, with whom he had four children. Electoral District Of Lowan
The electoral district of Lowan is a rural Victorian Legislative Assembly (Lower House) electoral district of the Victorian Parliament. It is located within the Western Victoria Region of the Legislative Council. It was initially created by the Electoral Act Amendment Act 1888, taking effect at the 1889 elections. It is the state’s biggest electorate by area, covering about 41,858 km². Lowan includes the country towns of Casterton, Coleraine, Dartmoor, Dimboola, Hamilton, Horsham, Jeparit, Kaniva, Nhill and Rainbow. The current seat was established in 2002 although several previous seats held the same name. The current member is The Nationals' Emma Kealy. Bill Phelan
William Phelan (16 July 1915 – 22 December 1973) was an Australian politician. He was born in Maryborough to ironmonger Sydney Clifford Phelan and Letitia Ellen Chellew. He attended the local high school and on 22 October 1938 married Hazel Patten, with whom he had four children. He worked in the family firm and in 1939 succeeded his father as managing director. He expanded the firm until in 1950 it was the largest in Maryborough. From 1944 to 1961 he served on Maryborough Council, with a term as mayor from 1954 to 1955. Keith Turnbull
Keith Hector Turnbull (28 December 1907 – 4 September 1978) was an Australian politician. He was born in Bendigo to farmer Walter Turnbull and Margaret Gunning. He attended the local state school and became a farmer at Wedderburn. He served in the AIF during World War II and around 1940 married Olive Jean Mellis, with whom he had five children. In 1950 he was elected to the Victorian Legislative Assembly as the Liberal and Country Party member for Korong. He transferred to Kara Kara in 1955 and became Minister of Lands and Soldier Settlement; he added the Conservation portfolio in 1961. In 1964 he was defeated by a Country Party candidate and retired from politics. His cousin Campbell Turnbull and son-in-law Charles Hider were also members of the Victorian Parliament. After politics he was chairman of the Grain Elevators Board from 1965 to 1977. Neil Trezise
Neil Benjamin "Nipper" Trezise (8 February 1931 – 20 August 2006) was an Australian rules footballer who represented in the Victorian Football League and later a politician who represented the Labor Party in the Victorian Legislative Assembly. He was of Cornish descent. Football career Originally from Redan, Victoria, Trezise played 185 games for 272 goals between 1949 and 1959 at the Geelong Football Club in the VFL, playing in the 1951 and 1952 premiership sides. Following his retirement in 1959 (a year in which he was Geelong captain), Trezise continued his service to the club, coaching the reserves side, and then becoming club president in 1974.
