Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Bugge Wesseltoft
Jens Christian Bugge Wesseltoft (born 1 February 1964) is a Norwegian jazz pianist, composer, and producer, son of jazz guitarist Erik Wesseltoft. Career In 1989, Wesseltoft collaborated with the Knut Riisnæs Quartet and was soon after contacted by Arild Andersen to join in on commissioned work for Vossajazz—released on the album ''Sagn'' (1990)—and the follow-up ''Arv'' (1993). He worked with Jan Garbarek on his ''Molde Canticle'', a commission from Moldejazz, released on the 1990 album ''I Took Up the Runes''. Wesseltoft had an impact on the Norwegian jazz scene at the beginning of the 1990s while going through a transition from Nordic jazz traditions, exemplified by the ECM label, to a style sometimes referred to as "future jazz" or nu jazz. Roger Arve Vigulf
Roger Arve Vigulf (born 9 June 1964 in Spjelkavik) is a Norwegian clarinet soloist and composer. Roger Arve Vigulf holds a Bachelor as clarinetist from the Norwegian Academy of Music, having studied with Richard Kjelstrup. Vigulf has also studied chamber music with Leif Jørgensen and with Lee Morgan in Copenhagen, made possible with a scholarship from Norway's Fund for Performing Artists. As a soloist, Vigulf has performed more than 100 works from composers such as Hegdal, Nordensten, Lønner, Lang, Martinaitis, Balakauskas and Hundsnes . Vigulf has also been featured as soloist with a number of chamber- and symphony orchestras. As an orchestral musician he has held engagements with The Norwegian Chamber Orchestra, Opera Mobile, The Norwegian Radio Orchestra, Trondheim Symphony Orchestra, Stavanger Symphony Orchestra, Kristiansund Opera, and with three of the Norwegian Armed Forces bands. Gottfried Von Der Goltz
Gottfried von der Goltz (born 1 June 1964 in Würzburg, Germany) is a German violinist and conductor, specialising in the baroque repertoire. Born into the ancient Brandenburgish Goltz family, Gottfried was a great-grandson of the former commander of the Baltic Sea Division and the Baltische Landeswehr during World War I and the Russian Civil War, General Rüdiger von der Goltz. His first teachers were his parents, and Kirsti Hjort. After further education in Hannover, New York, and Freiburg, he joined the radio orchestra of Hamburg's Norddeutscher Rundfunk at the age of 21. Two years later he left in order to focus on his career as a soloist, chamber musician, and conductor. He is now musical leader of the Freiburger Barockorchester. Carl Petter Opsahl
Carl Petter Opsahl (born 31 May 1964 in Oslo, Norway) is a Norwegian priest, jazz musician and journalist. Career Opsahl was involved in the establishment of "Caledonia Jazzband" (1982) and toured in New Orleans (1983), whereupon he settled there and played in the "All Star Brass Band" (1986). Later he established the Chateau Neuf Spelemannslag (1992–2002) and "Soulfood" (former "Creole Quartet"), together with Christian Frank (bass), Bjørn Olufsen (drums) and Wollert Krohn-Hansen (piano). He released his debut solo album ''Indigodalen'' (2001) with self-composed traditional folk music where he collaborated with Tord Gustavsen, Åsmund Reistad, Ingar Zach and Eline Monrad Vistven. Harald Devold
Harald Devold (13 May 1964 – 19 February 2016) was a Norwegian jazz musician (alto saxophone, soprano saxophone and flute) from Vadsø, Finnmark. He is also known as a big band organizer, music producer and music political activist. He was born and raised in Langevåg, Sula, Møre og Romsdal. Biography Devold received his musical education at the Norwegian Academy of Music. He was known for his versatility as a musician and has since the 1980s been one of Norway's most commonly used freelance musicians. He was a driving force for the big band Oslo Groove Company, which received the 1990 Spellemannprisen. Devold settled in Vadsø (1995) and then worked as head of Scene Finnmark, which inter alia disposes regional musician groups LINK and Ensemble Noor. He was a music producer for Scene Finnmark. Terje Isungset
Terje Isungset (born May 4, 1964) is a Norwegian drummer. From his background in jazz and traditional Scandinavian music, he has designed musical instruments from non-traditional materials, including ice. Career Isungset was raised in Geilo where he played traditional dance music with his father (accordion) during his high school days. Roy Lønhøiden
Roy Lønhøiden (born in Kongsvinger, Norway, on 4 May 1964) is a Norwegian composer and singer-songwriter in the country music genre. His music is considered a blend of traditional Norwegian folk and American roots music. Biography Lønhøiden was born in Finnskogen and grew up near Lake Vingersjøen by the district of Langeland in Kongsvinger. His mother and grandparents were in the Pentecostal church and would often perform for prisoners with her congregation. He formed a group with Kristin Solli Schøien called Peyton Place in 1994 and they received an offer for a contract with Sony Music. Despite this, Lønhøiden decided to travel to the United States in 1995, where he lived with relatives and friends. He is influenced by Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, and Townes Van Zandt and although he returned to Norway after a year, he has been back to visit the US multiple times. Johannes Eick
Johannes Eick (born 22 April 1964) is a Norwegian bassist (double bass and electric bass guitar), the son of bassist and vibraphonist Jürgen Eick (b. 1937), and the older brother of musicians Trude Eick and Mathias Eick. In his youth he played in the band «Kix», with Elin Rosseland (1982–86), but is most known for cooperations with Karin Krog, John Surman, Vigleik Storaas, Christian Wallumrød, Sidsel Endresen and Hans Mathisen.
