1963 Rand Grand Prix
The 6th Rand Grand Prix was a motor race, run to Formula One rules, held on 14 December 1963 at Kyalami, South Africa. The race was run over two heats, each of 25 laps of the circuit, and was won overall by British driver John Surtees in a Ferrari 156. Surtees secured pole position for the first heat, and won with team-mate Lorenzo Bandini in second. This result was repeated in the second heat for the Ferraris to take the 1-2 positions very comfortably. Local drivers took the minor placings after Team Lotus suffered from fuel vaporisation problems. Rand Grand Prix
The Rand Grand Prix was a motor race held at various circuits in South Africa. The first event took place in 1937 but it was not held regularly until the 1960s, when it was run to Formula One rules and formed part of the non-Championship calendar. At that time it represented an annual warm-up race before the South African Grand Prix. Netuar
Netuar was a South African racing car constructor, which competed in 22 non-World Championship Formula One races. Overview Netuar was founded by Rauten Hartman in 1961. The name Netuar is "Rauten" spelled backwards. They raced in non-championship Formula One races from 1961 to 1964 and again in 1966 and 1967. Their first race was the 1961 Rand Grand Prix, and their last was the 1967 Pat Fairfield Trophy. Their best result was 5th in the 1966 Easter Grand Prix. The driver for all the races was Rauten Hartman. They used Peugeot 403 engines in all races except the 1967 races, when they used Alfa Romeo engines. Netuar competed in other open-wheel races in southern Africa as early as 1958 and also took part in hill-climb races in the region. The car was designed and built from scratch by Hartman himself. Alex Blignaut
Alex Blignaut (30 November 1932 in Johannesburg – 15 January 2001 in Honeydew, Johannesburg) was a racing driver and motor racing team owner from South Africa. Career Blignaut raced locally in South Africa for many years and made two appearances in the Formula One Rand Grand Prix under the "Team Valencia" banner, in 1963 and 1964, finishing 12th on both occasions. He also entered the 1965 South African Grand Prix, a World Championship event, but withdrew before the meeting took place. He later turned to team ownership, setting up the "Alex Blignaut Racing Team" and entering cars in the South African Formula One Championship throughout the late 1960s and early 1970s, earning many race wins. Among the drivers who competed for Blignaut were Eddie Keizan and Ian Scheckter. David William Charlton (27 October 1936 – 24 February 2013) was a racing driver from South Africa. Charlton was born in Brotton, Yorkshire. He participated in 13 World Championship Formula One Grands Prix, debuting on 1 January 1965. He scored no championship points. He competed in many non-World Championship Formula One races, winning the South African Formula One Championship six times in succession from 1970 to 1975. Charlton died in Johannesburg, South Africa on 24 February 2013, aged 76. Trevor Taylor (racing Driver)
Trevor Taylor (26 December 1936 – 27 September 2010) was a British motor racing driver from England. Early career Trevor Taylor was born in Sheffield, the son of a garage owner from Rotherham. He began his racing career in Formula Three racing, initially in a Staride and later a Cooper-Norton. Ten victories in 1958 earned him the British Formula Three Championship. After a frustrating year in 1959 spent with his own Formula Two Cooper, he received an invitation to run his Lotus 18 as a second works car for 1960. He finished equal first in the Formula Junior championship with Jim Clark, although he competed in two more races that counted towards the championship than Clark who was already driving regularly for Team Lotus in Formula One. Taylor went on to win the title on his own account in 1961. LDS (automobile)
LDS is the name given to various single seater racing specials built for the South African Formula One Championship. The "specials" were built by Louis Douglas Serrurier, hence the name. The Mark 1 and Mark 2 models were based on Cooper designs, whilst the Mark 3 was based on the Brabham BT11. Mark 1 and Mark 2 models (1962–1965) used Alfa Romeo 1.5-litre straight-4 engines. Doug Serrurier
Louis Douglas Serrurier (9 December 1920 in Germiston – 4 June 2006) was a racing driver and racing car constructor from South Africa. He participated in 3 Formula One World Championship Grands Prix in the 1960s, only racing in the South African Grand Prix event, debuting on 29 December 1962. He scored no championship points. Racing car constructor Serrurier built a series of racing cars under the name of LDS (automobile), LDS, after his initials. The first was based on a Cooper Car Company, Cooper, and later cars were based on Brabhams. The cars were raced mainly by Serrurier himself, and Sam Tingle.
