Graded Stakes Race
A graded stakes race is a thoroughbred horse race in the United States that meets the criteria of the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). A specific grade level (I, II, III or listed) is then assigned to the race, based on statistical analysis of the quality of the field in previous years, provided the race meets the minimum purse criteria for the grade in question. In Canada, a similar grading system is maintained by the Jockey Club of Canada. Graded stakes races are similar to Group races in Europe but the grading is more dynamic in North America. The grading system was designed in 1973 and first published in 1974. The original purpose of grading was to identify the most competitive races, which helps horsemen make comparisons of the relative quality of bloodstock for breeding and sales purposes. William Lee Shoemaker (August 19, 1931 – October 12, 2003) was an American jockey. For 29 years he held the world record for total professional jockey victories. Early life Referred to as "Bill", "Willie," and "The Shoe", William Lee Shoemaker was born in the town of Fabens, Texas. Braulio Baeza (born March 26, 1940) is an American Thoroughbred horse racing Hall of Fame jockey and one of the master Thoroughbred jockeys of our time. In 1963, he was the first Latin American jockey to win the Kentucky Derby. Baeza began his racing career in 1955 in Panama at Hipodromo Juan Franco, and in March 1960, was invited to Miami, Florida to ride under contract for Owner/Trainer, Fred Hooper. Admiral's Voyage (1959-1989) was an American thoroughbred horse that was bred and raced by Fred W. Hooper. Admiral's Voyage won 12 out of his 52 starts during four seasons of racing, earning a total of $455,879. As a three-year-old, Admiral's Voyage won the Wood Memorial and the Louisiana Derby, finished 9th to winner Decidedly in the 1962 Kentucky Derby and was a runner-up to Jaipur in the 1962 Belmont Stakes. Raywood J. Broussard (August 11, 1937 - October 6, 1993) was an American jockey in the sport of Thoroughbred horse racing. "Ray" Broussard was born in Vermilion Parish, Louisiana, home to many Acadians and an area that would produce a number of other Cajun jockeys including Eddie Delahoussaye, Randy Romero, Shane Sellers, and Ray Sibille. Like all jockeys from the Bayou country, Broussard began riding at unregulated local Bush tracks. His skills led to a career as a professional jockey, becoming a leading rider at Fair Grounds Race Course in New Orleans who would induct him in their Hall of Fame. Thomas Wallace Dunn (December 4, 1911 – April 21, 2004) was a Canadian-born Thoroughbred horse trainer. Born in Minitonas, Manitoba, Wally Dunn went to Vancouver, British Columbia, at age seventeen, where he would find work in Thoroughbred horse racing. One of five brothers who became involved in the sport, his brother Wilson Dunn bred George Royal and brother George trained the 1965 Canadian Horse of the Year. In the 1930s, Wally Dunn took horses south to race at Santa Anita Park in Los Angeles, California. Dunn's career as a trainer was interrupted by World War II when he served overseas with the Canadian Army. After the war, Dunn returned to train in California. Among his notable Thoroughbreds was in Correspondent who won 1953's Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland Race Course and the following year the Hollywood Gold Cup Stakes at Hollywood Park Racetrack. Johnny Longden
John Eric "Johnny" Longden (February 14, 1907 – February 14, 2003) was an American Hall of Fame and National Champion jockey and a trainer of Thoroughbred racehorses who was born in Wakefield, Yorkshire, England. His father emigrated to Canada in 1909, settling in Taber, Alberta. Career By 1912, Longden Sr. had saved enough money to send for his wife and young son to join him in Canada. However, the Longdens' train was late getting to the port of Southampton, and they missed their scheduled voyage to New York City on the ''Titanic''. As a young man, Longden Jr. worked in the mining industry.
