Members Of The Western Australian Legislative Council, 1958–1960
This is a list of members of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 22 May 1958 to 21 May 1960. The chamber had 30 seats made up of ten provinces each electing three members, on a system of rotation whereby one-third of the members would retire at each biennial election. Frederick Lavery
Frederick Richard Hugh Lavery (13 February 1898 – 12 January 1971) was an Australian trade unionist and politician who was a Labor Party member of the Legislative Council of Western Australia from 1952 to 1971. Lavery was born in Coolgardie, Western Australia, to Mary (née de Landgrafft) and William Lavery. He began his schooling in Southern Cross, but later moved away from the country and attended Fremantle Boys' School. After leaving school, Lavery worked for periods as a contractor (at Ballidu), bus driver, and truck driver (for Commonwealth Oil Refineries). He joined the Road Transport Union in 1920, and served as treasurer for 14 years and on the executive for 24 years, and eventually becoming a life member. Lavery entered parliament at the 1952 Legislative Council election, replacing the retiring Edmund Gray in West Province. He was re-elected in 1958, and at the 1965 state election transferred to the new South Metropolitan Province, following a redistribution. ... Arthur Griffith (Australian Politician)
Sir Arthur Frederick Griffith (22 April 1913 – 17 November 1982) was an Australian politician, and a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly from 1950 until 1953 representing the seat of Canning, and a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council representing the Suburban and North Metropolitan provinces from 1953 until 1977. He served as President of the Legislative Council from May 1974 until May 1977. Biography Griffith was born in Geraldton, Western Australia, to George Griffith, a life insurance inspector, and Flora (née McDonald). He was educated at South Perth Primary School and at Perth Boys School. He left in 1928 at the age of 15 to take up a job in insurance, and in 1933, he became a law clerk. On 24 June 1940, he enlisted in the Royal Australian Air Force for service in World War II. Metropolitan-Suburban Province
The Metropolitan-Suburban Province was a three-member electoral province of the Western Australian Legislative Council, located in the metropolitan region of Perth. It was created by the ''Constitution Acts Amendment Act 1899'', and became effective on 29 August 1900 following a special election to fill all three seats. Historically taking in many coastal and riverside areas in the western suburbs of Perth, it was considered safe for the Nationalist Party for most of its existence. At the 1950 elections, it was renamed Suburban Province, losing Claremont and Subiaco and moving inland. In 1963–1964, electoral changes to the Legislative Council, which abolished the 10 three-member seats and created 15 two-member seats in their place, resulted in the seat's abolishment, with its area being divided between North-East Metropolitan Province and South-East Metropolitan Province. James Murray (9 April 1895 – 19 January 1974) was an Australian politician who served in both houses of the Parliament of Western Australia, as a member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, Legislative Assembly from 1947 to 1950 and as a member of the Western Australian Legislative Council, Legislative Council from 1951 to 1965. He represented the Liberal Party of Australia (Western Australian Division), Liberal Party. Murray was born in Inverness, Scotland, and attended Inverness High School. He came to Australia as a teenager, and in March 1915 enlisted in the First Australian Imperial Force, Australian Imperial Force. Murray had reached the rank of lieutenant by the war's end, and in June 1918 was wounded in action while fighting in France. George Bennetts
George Bennetts (11 April 1890 - 27 March 1980) was an Australian politician. He was an Australian Labor Party member of the Western Australian Legislative Council from 1946 to 1965, representing South-East Province. Bennetts was born at Wallaroo Mines in South Australia, but his family moved to the Kalgoorlie-Boulder area of Western Australia in 1896. His family's situation during his time in Boulder was reportedly "beset with difficulties", living in a home of hessian and bags and struggling with insufficient water rations. He was educated at Collick's school, the convent school on the Horseshoe Lease and the South Boulder School, but left school at fourteen. He was a builders' labourer, worked in the bicycle trade and carted sandalwood before joining the Western Australian Government Railways in 1911.
