The 1958 Sun Bowl was a college football bowl game played between Drake Bulldogs and Louisville Cardinals at Kidd Field in El Paso, Texas. Background This was Louisville's first ever bowl appearance. Warren Gaer
Warren N. Gaer (February 7, 1912 – January 13, 1997) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at Pepperdine College—now known as Pepperdine University—from 1946 to 1948 and Drake University from 1949 to 1958, compiling a career college football record of 64–49–2. Pepperdine hired Gaer to form its football program in 1945. He served as head coach there from 1946 to 1948. His teams tallied a mark of 22–6. Gaer died on January 13, 1997, of cancer in his hometown of Atlantic, Iowa. Frank Camp
Edward Franklin Camp Jr. (December 23, 1905 – January 26, 1986) was an American football player and coach. He served as the head football coach at the University of Louisville from 1946 to 1968, compiling a record of 118–95–2 (.551). He is credited as the man who brought back Louisville football following a three-year absence caused by World War II, and has the most wins of any head coach in school history. The 1958 Sun Bowl (December) was a college football postseason bowl game between the Wyoming Cowboys and the Hardin–Simmons Cowboys. This was the 25th Sun Bowl, and the first edition to be held in December; all prior Sun Bowls had been played on January 1 or January 2. Background Wyoming was champion of the Mountain States Conference for the third time in the 1950s and Hardin–Simmons was champion of the Border Conference for the third time in 16 years. Drake Bulldogs Football
The Drake Bulldogs are an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision non-scholarship college football program representing Drake University. They currently compete in the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League and have been charter members of the conference since 1993. Drake began playing intercollegiate football in 1893. History Scholarship era The 1922 Drake Bulldogs football team is considered by many to be the greatest in Drake history and is, to date, the only undefeated Bulldog team. Drake capped the historic season with a 48–6 triumph over Mississippi State on November 25, 1922. The Louisville Cardinals football team represents the University of Louisville in the sport of American football. The Cardinals compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and compete in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Louisville had played several years at club level and teams were mostly composed with medical students. The 1949 Salad Bowl was a college football bowl game played between Drake Bulldogs and Arizona Wildcats at Montgomery Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona. The game marked the second bowl game for each school. Drake had previously played in the 1946 Raisin Bowl, while Arizona was featured in the 1921 San Diego E-W Christmas Classic. The game was sponsored by Phoenix Kiwanis Club. The Wildcats out-gained Drake in total yards 355-206; however, the Bulldogs capitalized from three costly Arizona turnovers during the contest. Sun Bowl
The Sun Bowl is a college football bowl game that has been played since 1935 in the southwestern United States at El Paso, Texas. Along with the Sugar Bowl and Orange Bowl, it is the second-oldest bowl game in the country, behind the Rose Bowl. Usually held near the end of December, games are played at the Sun Bowl stadium on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso. Since 2011, it has featured teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) and the Pac-12 Conference.
