1949 Salad Bowl
The 1949 Salad Bowl was a college football bowl game played between Drake Bulldogs and Arizona Wildcats at Montgomery Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona. The game marked the second bowl game for each school. Drake had previously played in the 1946 Raisin Bowl, while Arizona was featured in the 1921 San Diego E-W Christmas Classic. The game was sponsored by Phoenix Kiwanis Club. The Wildcats out-gained Drake in total yards 355-206; however, the Bulldogs capitalized from three costly Arizona turnovers during the contest. Game summary Drake's Frank Metzger scored on a 1-yard run to give the Bulldogs an early 7–0 lead. The second quarter would see the Bulldogs go up 14–0 thanks to a Floyd Miller 20-yard interception return. An Ed Walgast 15-yard run would cut the lead to 14–7 at half. Montgomery Stadium
Phoenix Union High School (PUHS) was a high school that was part of the Phoenix Union High School District in downtown Phoenix, Arizona, one of five high school-only school districts in the Phoenix area. Founded in 1895 and closed in 1992, the school consisted of numerous buildings on a campus which by 1928 consisted of 18 acres. In 1982, the majority of the campus was listed on the National Register of Historic Places as the Phoenix Union High School Historic District With The PUHS campus was included in the Phoenix Historic Property Register in 1986, and received landmark designation in 2003. The campus is now part of the Phoenix Biomedical Campus, including three buildings on East Van Buren Street between North 5th and North 7th Streets built in 1911-1912 and designed by Norman Foote Marsh in the Neoclassical style. Albert Kawal
Albert Peter Kawal (July 4, 1912 – January 1, 1990) was an American football and basketball player and coach of football, basketball, and baseball. He served as the head football coach at Drake University (1947–1948), Temple University (1949–1954), and Southern Illinois University Carbondale (1960–1961), compiling a career college football record of 52–53–6. Kawal was also the head baseball coach at the University of Tulsa in 1964, tallying a mark of 10–12. Mike Casteel
Miles Webster "Mike" Casteel (December 30, 1895 – March 27, 1977) was an American football player and coach. He played college football as the quarterback at Kalamazoo College and also played one season in the National Football League (NFL) for the Rock Island Independents. He later served as the head football coach at the University of Arizona in from 1939 to 1948, compiling a record of 46–26–3. Early years Casteel was born in Elmira, New York. He attended Kalamazoo College where he played football, basketball and track. He also served in the United States Army during World War I, receiving the Silver Star for his performance in the artillery service at Verdun's north front. Drake Bulldogs Football
The Drake Bulldogs are an NCAA Division I Football Championship Subdivision non-scholarship college football program representing Drake University. They currently compete in the non-scholarship Pioneer Football League and have been charter members of the conference since 1993. Drake began playing intercollegiate football in 1893. History Scholarship era The 1922 Drake Bulldogs football team is considered by many to be the greatest in Drake history and is, to date, the only undefeated Bulldog team. Drake capped the historic season with a 48–6 triumph over Mississippi State on November 25, 1922. Arizona Wildcats Football
The Arizona Wildcats football program represents the University of Arizona (UA) in the sport of American college football. Arizona competes in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) and the Pac-12 Conference#Divisions, South Division of the Pac-12 Conference (Pac-12). The Salad Bowl was an annual post-season American college football bowl game played at Montgomery Stadium in Phoenix, Arizona, from 1947 to 1955. The bowl was sponsored by the Phoenix and Valley of the Sun Kiwanis Clubs. The bowl stopped inviting college teams in 1952; the 1953 and 1954 games were played among service teams.
