1958 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1958 municipal election was held October 15, 1958 to elect six aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council, four trustees to sit on the separate school board, and three trustees to sit on the public school board. There was no election for mayor, as William Hawrelak was one year into a two-year term. There were ten aldermen on city council, but four of the positions were already filled: Cliffard Roy, William Connelly, Hu Harries, and Reginald Easton were all elected to two-year terms in 1957 and were still in office. James Falconer was also elected to a two-year term in 1957, but had resigned; accordingly, William Henning was elected to a one-year term to complete Falconer's term. Edmonton City Council
The Edmonton City Council is the governing body of the City of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Edmonton currently has one mayor and twelve city councillors. Elections are held every four years. The most recent was held in 2021, and the next is in 2025. The mayor is elected across the whole city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. Councillors are elected one per ward, a division of the city, through the First Past the Post plurality voting system. On July 22, 2009, City Council voted to change the electoral system of six wards to a system of 12 wards; each represented by a single councillor. The changes took effect in the 2010 election. William Hawrelak
William Hawrelak (October 4, 1915 – November 7, 1975) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, the longest-serving mayor in Edmonton's history, and a candidate for election to the House of Commons of Canada. Early life Hawrelak was born in Wasel, Alberta to Ukrainian immigrants Wasel/William and Anastasia Hawrelak (the family's ancestral name was Гавриляк (''Havryliak'')). (Wasel was named after William's father.) He married Pearl Shandro (daughter of Alberta MLA Andrew Shandro, after whom Hawrelak's home district was named) the pair had three daughters. In 1945, Hawrelak moved to Edmonton and purchased the Prairie Rose Manufacturing Co., which made soft drinks. He served as president of the Alberta Farmer's Union and of the Edmonton Federation of Community Leagues before entering politics. Hu Harries
Hu Harries (December 8, 1921 – August 26, 1986) was a Canadian economist and politician. Born in Strathmore, Alberta, he earned a Bachelor of Science in agriculture from the University of Alberta in 1945. He also received a master's degree in political science from the University of Toronto and a doctorate in economics from Iowa State University. His area of expertise related to the oil industry and transportation. From 1958 to 1960, he was the director of the School of Commerce in the Faculty of Arts and Science at the University of Alberta. From 1960 to 1968, he was the first dean of the new Faculty of Commerce. As well, he ran his own economic consultants firm, Hu Harries and Associates Ltd. He was a consultant with the World Bank and worked with the governments of Alberta, Manitoba and British Columbia. 1957 Edmonton Municipal Election
The 1957 municipal election was held November 3, 1957 to elect a mayor and five aldermen to sit on Edmonton City Council and four trustees to sit on the public school board (Michael O'Byrne, Orest Demco, Catherine McGrath, and Joseph Moreau were acclaimed to two-year terms on the separate school board). The electorate also decided seven plebiscite questions. The election would normally have fallen on October 16 (the third Wednesday in October), but was delayed because of the provincial plebiscite on October 30. There were ten aldermen on city council, but five of the positions were already filled: Frederick John Mitchell, Ethel Wilson, Laurette Douglas, Giffard Main, and Donald Bowen were all elected to two-year terms in 1956 and were still in office. James Falconer
James Falconer (9 June 1856 – 21 April 1931) was a Scottish solicitor and Liberal Party politician. Family and education Falconer was born in Carmyllie, Forfarshire, the son of Donald Falconer. He was educated at Arbroath High School and the University of Edinburgh where he obtained his MA degree. He married Ada Kennedy. Frederick John Mitchell
Frederick John Mitchell (December 4, 1893 – December 25, 1979) was a politician in Alberta, Canada, a mayor of Edmonton, and a candidate for election to the Legislative Assembly of Alberta. Early life Fred Mitchell was born December 4, 1893, in Stratford, Ontario, but had his early education in Elmira. He attended the Berlin Collegiate and Technical Institute, and took up employment with the Elmira Furniture Co. Ltd. upon graduation. He later joined the Metropolitan Bank in Elmira as a stenographer before becoming a registered industrial accountant. In this capacity, he moved to Leross, Saskatchewan in 1913 to work for the Dominion Bank. He remained there until going overseas to serve in World War I. George Prudham
William George Prudham, (February 27, 1904 – August 24, 1974) was a Canadian politician. Born in Kilbride (now Burlington), Ontario, he moved to Alberta as a young man and was elected to the House of Commons of Canada representing the riding of Edmonton West in the 1949 federal election. A Liberal, he was re-elected in 1953. In 1950, he was the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Resources and Development. Ethel Sylvia Wilson
Ethel Sybella Wilson (February 13, 1902 - December 8, 1983) was a labour activist and a politician from Alberta, Canada. She served on Edmonton City Council from 1952 to 1966 and as Social Credit Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta (MLA) from 1959 to 1971. She served as a cabinet minister in the Social Credit governments of Ernest Manning and Harry Strom from 1962 to 1971. Julia Kiniski
Julia Kiniski (born 1899 in Poland - d. October 11, 1969 in Edmonton, Alberta), was a four-term aldermen on the Edmonton City Council from 1963 until her death in 1969. Vincent Martin Dantzer (2 October 1923 – 13 March 2001) was a Canadian lawyer, economist, and politician, a member of the House of Commons of Canada, and a mayor of Edmonton, Alberta. Early life Dantzer was born in Rush Lake, Saskatchewan. He enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force in 1942, and served as a Flying Officer in the Burma Campaign. He left the military in 1946, and began studying economics at the University of Saskatchewan, from which he graduated with an honours degree in 1948.
