1958 Eastern Michigan Hurons Football Team
The 1958 Eastern Michigan Hurons football team represented Eastern Michigan College (renamed Eastern Michigan University in 1959) in the Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) during the 1958 NCAA College Division football season. In their seventh season under head coach Fred Trosko, the Hurons compiled a 4–5 record (3–3 against IIAC opponents) and outscored their opponents, 108 to 88. Charles J. Shonta was the team captain The team's statistical leaders included John Kubiak with 452 passing yards and 410 yards of total offense, Albert Day with 296 rushing yards, and Jerry Wedge with 183 receiving yards. On October 18, 1958, the Hurons defeated Eastern Illinois, 31–0, in front for a homecoming crowd of 7,200 at Briggs Field in Ypsilanti. Alex Klukach received the team's most valuable player award. Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference
The Interstate Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (IIAC) was a college athletic conference that existed from 1908 to 1970 in the United States. At one time the Illinois Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, or IIAC, was a robust league that claimed most of the Illinois institutions of higher education. It was nicknamed the "Little Nineteen," but in 1928 had a membership of 23 schools. Former Illinois State University track coach Joseph Cogdal, associated with the IIAC for 43 years of its 62-year history, noted that the league had roots in the 1870s when a number of schools banded together for oratorical contests. Their first intercollegiate football game was played in 1881 between Illinois State University and Knox College, and by 1894 a football association was established. McAndrew Stadium
McAndrew Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Carbondale, Illinois, United States. It opened in 1938 and was home to the Southern Illinois University Salukis football team, as well as the track team. It was replaced by Saluki Stadium in 2010. Originally built by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression of the mid-1930s, it had a construction cost of $150,000, only seated 5,000 and was hailed as one of the most attractive stadiums in the Midwest. The first game at the stadium took place on October 1, 1938, a 27–0 loss to Southeast Missouri State. Two weeks later, Southern Illinois University defeated Arkansas State, 6–0, for its first home win in its new stadium.
