McAndrew Stadium
McAndrew Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium in Carbondale, Illinois, United States. It opened in 1938 and was home to the Southern Illinois University Salukis football team, as well as the track team. It was replaced by Saluki Stadium in 2010. Originally built by the Works Progress Administration during the Great Depression of the mid-1930s, it had a construction cost of $150,000, only seated 5,000 and was hailed as one of the most attractive stadiums in the Midwest. The first game at the stadium took place on October 1, 1938, a 27–0 loss to Southeast Missouri State. Two weeks later, Southern Illinois University defeated Arkansas State, 6–0, for its first home win in its new stadium. Carbondale, Illinois
Carbondale is a city in Jackson and Williamson Counties, Illinois, United States, within the Southern Illinois region informally known as "Little Egypt". The city developed from 1853 because of the stimulation of railroad construction into the area. Today the major roadways of Illinois Route 13 and U.S. Route 51 intersect in the city. The city is southeast of St. Louis, on the northern edge of the Shawnee National Forest. Carbondale is the home of the main campus of Southern Illinois University (SIU). The Southern Illinois Salukis football program represents Southern Illinois University Carbondale in college football. The Salukis are a member of the NCAA and compete at the Division I Football Championship Subdivision level (formerly known as NCAA Division I-AA). The Salukis are a member of the Missouri Valley Football Conference and play in Saluki Stadium on the campus of Southern Illinois University Carbondale in Carbondale, Illinois, which has a seating capacity of 15,000. William McAndrew (coach)
William McAndrew (April 29, 1887 – February 11, 1943) was an American football, basketball, and baseball coach and college athletics administrator. He served two stints at the head football coach at Southern Illinois University Carbondale, from 1913 to 1916 and then returning from 1921 to 1938, compiling a record of 83–79–20 in 22 seasons. His 83 wins are the most of any head coach in the history of the Southern Illinois Salukis football program. McAndrew was also the head basketball coach at Southern Illinois from 1913 to 1943, tallying a mark of 309–221, and the school head baseball coach from 1921 to 1924. McAndrew was an alumnus of Vincennes University where he was a member of Sigma Pi fraternity. He also played professionally in the Central League before becoming a coach and teacher. Saluki Stadium is a stadium on the campus of Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. It is primarily utilized by the Southern Illinois Salukis football team. History Construction on Saluki Stadium was completed in August 2010. The horseshoe-shaped stadium seats 15,000 spectators and hosts the school's American football program, replacing McAndrew Stadium.
