1957 Uber Cup
The 1957 Uber Cup was the inaugural Uber Cup; a women's international team badminton championship promoted by Betty Uber. Eleven nations took part competing first (as in Thomas Cup competition) within zones to qualify for interzone matches. The final round was held in Lytham St Annes, Lancashire, England on 18 March 1957. The United States won the event, defeating Denmark. Teams Three teams qualified for the interzone stage of the competition, the United States, India, and Denmark. Denmark received a bye in the first round to go directly into the final. Originally four teams were to be represented in the interzone matches, but New Zealand which qualified from Australasia withdrew. Kirsten Thorndahl (also known as Kirsten Granlund) (9 April 1928 – 21 September 2007) was a Danish badminton player. She became the first player to become All England champion in all three categories: women's singles, women's doubles and mixed doubles. Susan Devlin
Susan Devlin Peard (born 1931) is a former badminton player who represented both the US and Ireland in international competition. She is the daughter of J. Frank Devlin, an Irish badminton great, who moved his family to the United States in the late 1930s. She is the older sister of Judy Devlin Hashman, with whom she won numerous international women's doubles championships, including six titles at the prestigious All-England Championships (1954, 1956, 1960, 1961, 1963, 1966). Career The Devlin sisters won a record ten United States women's doubles titles between 1953 and 1966. They also formed a doubles pairing that won all of its individual matches for the world champion U.S. Uber Cup (women's international) teams of 1957 and 1960. Ethel Marshall
Ethel Marshall (May 6, 1924 - June 12, 2013) was an American badminton player noted for her mobility and shot-making prowess. Career An all-around athlete who also excelled in softball and tennis, Marshall won the US Women's Singles title on all seven occasions that she contested it (1947–1953), defeating seventeen-year-old Judy Devlin (Hashman) in the last of these. She also won the US Women's Doubles title in 1952 and 1956 with Beatrice Massman, defeating the Devlin sisters on the latter occasion who had recently won the All-England women's doubles title. Marshall reached the final of US Women's Doubles on several other occasions, the last one in 1974 as she approached her fiftieth birthday.
