Augusta Country Club
The Augusta Country Club (ACC) is a country club and golf course in Augusta, Georgia. It is located immediately adjacent to the more famous Augusta National Golf Club (ANGC). It also borders on the Sands Hill Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic African-American community. History In 1897, the 9-hole golf course known as the Bon Air Golf Club was designed by Donald Ross. In 1901, the course was expanded to 18-holes and then became known as the Augusta Country Club. In 1930, ACC held their first major national golf championship, the Southeastern Open, where amateur Bobby Jones defeated professional Horton Smith. In 2001, ACC successfully completed a restoration based on original 1927 Donald Ross sketches from the Tufts Archives in Pinehurst, North Carolina, which is how it remains today. Marlene Hagge
Marlene Hagge (née Bauer; born February 16, 1934) is an American former professional golfer. She was one of the thirteen founders of the LPGA in 1950. She won one major championship and 26 LPGA Tour career events. She is a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame. Amateur career Hagge was born in Eureka, South Dakota and had a progressively successful amateur experience. She started playing golf at age 3. At age 10, she won the Long Beach City Boys Junior. At age 13, she won the Western and National Junior Championships, the Los Angeles Women's City Championship, the Palm Springs Women's Championship, Northern California Open and the Indio Women's Invitational. Golf is a club-and-ball sport in which players use various clubs to hit balls into a series of holes on a course in as few strokes as possible. Golf, unlike most ball games, cannot and does not use a standardized playing area, and coping with the varied terrains encountered on different courses is a key part of the game. Courses typically have either 18 or 9 ''holes'', regions of terrain that each contain a ''cup'', the hole that receives the ball. Each hole on a course contains a teeing ground to start from, and a putting green containing the cup. Joyce Ziske
Joyce Ziske (born May 20, 1934 and also known as Joyce Ziske Malison) is an American professional golfer. As an amateur, Ziske won the Wisconsin Women's Amateur twice and the North and South Women's Amateur. She played on the 1954 Curtis Cup team. Ziske turned professional on February 8, 1955, and played on the LPGA Tour from 1955 to 1960. In 1960 she won the Women's Western Open which was one of the LPGA major championships at that time. She had her best finish in the U.S. Women's Open that same year, placing second. She retired from professional golf in 1960 after marrying Tom Malison in June 1961, but she played competitively at least once. In 1975, she was elected to the Wisconsin Golf Hall of Fame. Fay Crocker
Fay Crocker (2 August 1914 – 16 September 1983) was a Uruguayan professional golfer who played on the LPGA Tour. In her career, she won 11 LPGA tournaments, including two major championships, the 1955 U.S. Women's Open and 1960 Titleholders Championship. Crocker was the oldest player to win her first LPGA event, the first U.S. Women's Open champion from outside the United States, and the oldest women's major champion. Early life Crocker was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, on 2 August 1914. Her father Frederick was a rancher. Also a golfer, he was a 27-time national champion in Uruguay. Titleholders Championship
The Titleholders Championship was a women's golf tournament played from in 1937 to 1966 and again in 1972. It was later designated a major championship by the LPGA Tour. History The Titleholders Championship was founded in 1937. Like the Masters Tournament for men, which began a few years earlier, it was played in Augusta, Georgia, but at Augusta Country Club, not at the adjacent Augusta National Golf Club. The winners of various amateur and professional events were invited to take part, although most of the competitors were amateurs. There were very few women professionals at the time and most earned their living as club or teaching professionals. The Titleholders itself did not offer prize money until 1948, when a prize fund of $600 was introduced, with half of the money going to the professional placing highest in the event. Mary Lena Faulk
Mary Lena Faulk (April 15, 1926 – August 3, 1995) was an American professional golfer. Faulk was born in Chipley, Florida. At the age of 14 she moved to Thomasville, Georgia, where she won three consecutive Georgia Women's Amateur Matchplay Championships from 1946 to 1948. In 1953, Faulk won the U.S. Women's Amateur. In 1954 she lost in the semi-finals to Mickey Wright. That year she was a member of the U.S. team that defeated Great Britain to win the Curtis Cup and in Georgia, she won the state's 1954 Medal Play Championship. Faulk turned professional in 1955 and in her rookie year on the LPGA Tour finished second at the U.S. Women's Open. She retired from the pro tour in 1965 having won 10 tournaments including the Women's Western Open which was then one of the women's major golf championships.
