Augusta Country Club
The Augusta Country Club (ACC) is a country club and golf course in Augusta, Georgia. It is located immediately adjacent to the more famous Augusta National Golf Club (ANGC). It also borders on the Sands Hill Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places as a historic African-American community. History In 1897, the 9-hole golf course known as the Bon Air Golf Club was designed by Donald Ross (golfer), Donald Ross. In 1901, the course was expanded to 18-holes and then became known as the Augusta Country Club. In 1930, ACC held their first major national golf championship, the Southeastern Open, where amateur Bobby Jones (golfer), Bobby Jones defeated professional Horton Smith. Donald Ross (golfer)
Donald James Ross (November 23, 1872 – April 26, 1948) was a golf course designer. He was born in Dornoch, Scotland, but became a citizen of and spent most of his adult life in the United States. Ross started his career by being an apprentice to Old Tom Morris at St Andrews in Scotland around 1899. With the help of an American agronomy student, fellow Scotsman Robert White from St. Andrews, Ross decided to move to America. Ross invested all his life savings to move to the United States and walked off the boat with only $2. In America, he got his first job at Oakley Country Club in Watertown, Massachusetts. He quickly rose to the position of golf professional at Pinehurst Resort in North Carolina, where he began his course designing career. Golf Course
A golf course is the grounds on which the sport of golf is played. It consists of a series of holes, each consisting of a tee box, a fairway, the rough and other hazards, and a green with a cylindrical hole in the ground, known as a "cup". Augusta ( ), officially Augusta–Richmond County, is a consolidated city-county on the central eastern border of the U.S. state of Georgia. The city lies across the Savannah River from South Carolina at the head of its navigable portion. Augusta National Golf Club
Augusta National Golf Club, sometimes referred to as Augusta or the National, is a golf club in Augusta, Georgia, United States. Unlike most private clubs which operate as non-profits, Augusta National is a for-profit corporation, and it does not disclose its income, holdings, membership list, or ticket sales. Founded by Bobby Jones and Clifford Roberts, the course was designed by Jones and Alister MacKenzie and opened for play in 1932. Since 1934, the club has played host to the annual Masters Tournament, one of the four men's major championships in professional golf, and the only major played each year at the same course. The Sand Hills Historic District in Augusta, Georgia is a historic district which was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997. The district included 334 contributing buildings and a contributing site in a area roughly bounded by Monte Sano and North View Aves., Mount Auburn St., Johns Rd., and the Augusta Country Club. It is also known as Elizabethtown Historic District. The district "is a historic African-American neighborhood located in the western part of Augusta adjacent to the National Register-listed Summerville Historic District. The neighborhood is laid out in an incomplete grid pattern and consists of a historic African-American cemetery, residential buildings, commercial buildings, community landmark buildings, and landscaped yards and median of a road. Bobby Jones (golfer)
Robert Tyre Jones Jr. (March 17, 1902 – December 18, 1971) was an American amateur golfer who was one of the most influential figures in the history of the sport; he was also a lawyer by profession. Jones founded and helped design the Augusta National Golf Club, and co-founded the Masters Tournament. The innovations that he introduced at the Masters have been copied by virtually every professional golf tournament in the world. Titleholders Championship
The Titleholders Championship was a women's golf tournament played from in 1937 to 1966 and again in 1972. It was later designated a major championship by the LPGA Tour. History The Titleholders Championship was founded in 1937. Like the Masters Tournament for men, which began a few years earlier, it was played in Augusta, Georgia, but at Augusta Country Club, not at the adjacent Augusta National Golf Club. The winners of various amateur and professional events were invited to take part, although most of the competitors were amateurs. There were very few women professionals at the time and most earned their living as club or teaching professionals. Richmond County is a county located in the U.S. state of Georgia. As of the 2010 census, the population was 200,549. It is one of the original counties of Georgia, created February 5, 1777.
