Graded Stakes Race
A graded stakes race is a thoroughbred horse race in the United States that meets the criteria of the American Graded Stakes Committee of the Thoroughbred Owners and Breeders Association (TOBA). A specific grade level (I, II, III or listed) is then assigned to the race, based on statistical analysis of the quality of the field in previous years, provided the race meets the minimum purse criteria for the grade in question. In Canada, a similar grading system is maintained by the Jockey Club of Canada. Graded stakes races are similar to Group races in Europe but the grading is more dynamic in North America. The grading system was designed in 1973 and first published in 1974. The original purpose of grading was to identify the most competitive races, which helps horsemen make comparisons of the relative quality of bloodstock for breeding and sales purposes. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney
Cornelius "Sonny" Vanderbilt Whitney (February 20, 1899 – December 13, 1992) was an American businessman, film producer, government official, writer and philanthropist. He was also a polo player and the owner of a significant stable of Thoroughbred racehorses. Early life Born in Old Westbury, New York, he was the only son of the wealthy and socially prominent Harry Payne Whitney (1872–1932) and his wife, Gertrude Vanderbilt (1875–1942). He had a younger sister, Barbara Vanderbilt Whitney (1903-1982), and an elder sister, Flora Payne Whitney (1897–1986). As a member of both the Whitney and Vanderbilt families, he inherited a substantial fortune. He also proved to be a very capable businessman in his own right. Arnold Kirkland
Arnold Kirkland (November 11, 1921 – March 15, 1969) was an American Thoroughbred horse racing jockey. He was from Petersburg, Virginia and became one of the nation's top jockeys in the 1940s and 1950s. Riding career Arnold Kirkland rode in the Kentucky Derby five times. His best finish was a 3rd on Hasseyanda in the 1954 edition won by Determine. Kirkland won the 1948 Peter Pan Stakes on Escadu and with that same horse he challenged Citation on the far turn in the 1948 Belmont Stakes. Kirkland and Escadru made a bold run where the lead was whittled to 2 lengths with just 3/8 of a mile to go. Citation then spurted clear and became the eighth Triple Crown winner while the team of Kirkland and Escadru settled for 3rd. Kirland rode for many famous owners such as C. V. Nick Shuk
Nicholas Shuk (September 30, 1930 – October 1983) was an American jockey in thoroughbred horse racing. He began his career in 1948 as a contract rider for Art Rooney, owner of the Pittsburgh Steelers football team. In the 1950s, Shuk won the Maryland jockey title seven times and was the leading jockey at Delaware Park Racetrack three times. He handled such stars as Art Rooney's Little Harp, Brazen Brat, Cida, Tuscany, and Singing Beauty. Shuk rode Laffango, one of the top two-year-olds of 1952. Shuk rode in the Kentucky Derby, the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes with his best finish coming in the 1955 Preakness with Montpelier Stable's colt Saratoga who finished second to Nashua. Harry Trotsek
Harry E. Trotsek (April 18, 1912 – February 5, 1997) was an American Hall of Fame trainer and owner of Thoroughbred racehorses. He trained 96 stakes race winners including Champions Hasty Road, Moccasin, Oil Capitol, and Stan, and led all North American trainers in purse winnings in 1953. Trotsek was widely respected for his development of young jockeys including such riders as Johnny Sellers, Kenny Church and John Rotz. Rex Cooper Ellsworth (November 15, 1907 – August 24, 1997) was a major owner in Thoroughbred racing and twice the leading breeder in the United States whose story was featured with a cover of the February 25, 1963 edition of ''Sports Illustrated'' magazine. Mesh Tenney
Meshach A. "Mesh" Tenney (November 16, 1907 – November 6, 1993) was an American Thoroughbred horse trainer. From Arizona, Tenney began his career as a Thoroughbred trainer in the western United States in 1935. He won the Santa Anita Derby three times (1955, 1956, 1963) and was the leading money-winning trainer in the United States in 1962 and 1963. Tenney is best remembered as the trainer of Swaps, who won the 1955 Kentucky Derby and the Eclipse Award for Horse of the Year in 1956. He also trained Candy Spots, who won the 1963 Preakness Stakes and finished 2nd in both the Derby and the Belmont Stakes. During his 40-year career, Tenney trained 36 stakes winners. In 1991, he was inducted into the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame.
