Music Of Norway
Much has been learned about early music in Norway from physical artifacts found during archaeological digs. These include instruments such as the lur. Viking and medieval sagas also describe musical activity, as do the accounts of priests and pilgrims from all over Europe coming to visit St Olaf's grave in Trondheim. In the later part of the 19th century, Norway experienced economic growth leading to greater industrialization and urbanization. More music was made in the cities, and opera performances and symphony concerts were considered to be of high standards. In this era both prominent composers (like Edvard Grieg and Johan Svendsen) and performers combined the European traditions with Norwegian tones. The import of music and musicians for dance and entertainment grew, and this continued in the 20th century, even more so when gramophone records and radio became common. Mikhail Alperin
Michail Jefimowitsch Alperin (Ukrainian: Миха́йло Юхи́мович Альпе́рін; 7 November 1956 – 11 May 2018) was a Soviet-Norwegian jazz pianist, known as a key member of the Moscow Art Trio. AllMusic.com Biography Alperin was born in Kamianets-Podilskyi, Ukrainian SSR to a Jewish family. He was educated in Khmelnytskyi, Bălți and Chișinău. In 1980, he formed one of the first jazz ensembles in Moldavian SSR. He moved to Moscow in the 1980s and founded the ''Moscow Art Trio'' with Arkady Shilkloper and folk singer Sergey Nikolaevich Starostin. He has also worked with Huun Huur Tu. From 1993 to 2018 he lived in Oslo, Norway; he was professor of music at the Norwegian Academy of Music and he supervised pianist Helge Lien and Morten Qvenild among others. He released several works on ECM Records. He died on 11 May 2018 at the age of 61.

Ragnhild Berstad
Ragnhild Berstad (born in Oslo in 1956) is a Norwegian contemporary composer. Career Berstad started her musical career as a guitarist and music teacher. She later studied music theory at the University of Oslo and composition with Lasse Thoresen and Olav Anton Thommessen at the Norwegian State Academy of Music, where she received her diploma in 1997. Program 81/82
Program 81, later Program 82 was a new wave band from Bergen, Norway. After a self-titled mini LP and the LP'' Try to reach ...'' both of which came in 1981, the singer «Pjusken» replaced by Kate Augestad. At the end they changed their name to ''Program 82''. At the same time they started to perform their music with English lyrics and released the album ''Pictures''. At the next turn of the year, however, they chose to keep the name, and they returned to sing Norwegian texts. ''Slippe fri'' (1983) was the last album by ''Program 82''. Although the band released four albums on the Åge Aleksandersen label "Norsk Plateselskap", they never became any rock stars other than in Bergen. Hovland, Kalvenes and Augestad has contributed in a number of different bands and projects in Bergen. Kate Augestad
Kate Elisabeth Augestad (born 1956) is a Norwegian vocalist known from bands like Johnny Banan Band and Program 81/82, and the mother of mezzo-soprano, vocalist, actress and conductor Tora Augestad (b. 1979). Augestad was born in Bergen. After her singing career, she became Assistant Professor at University of Bergen, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, and "Handelshøyskolen BI" in Bergen. She has also appeared as an actor at Den Nationale Scene in Bergen. Musical career Augestad and Lasse Myrvold (1953–2006) were lead vocalists in the band "Johnny Banan Band", which later became The Aller Værste!. Geir Holmsen
Geir Holmsen (born 12 December 1956 in Oslo, Norway) is a Norwegian jazz musician, bassist, arranger and composer, and married 1983 to the singer Maj Britt Andersen. He participated in various bands connected to the jazz club Club 7 in Oslo, from the mid-1970s, including "Kråbøl", "Lotus" and "Chipahua". He is also known from "Jon Eberson Group" (1980–84), "Jazzpønkensemblet" (1982–85) and "Oslo Rhythm & Blues Ensemble" (1986–87). Career Holmsen is educated at the Norges Musikkhøgskole, and did composition studies with Gunnar Sønstevold and Maj Sønstevold, now Professor of Music at the University of Agder (UiA). In the 1970s he took part in jazz bands led by Terje Lie, Paul Weeden, Espen Rud and Ditlef Eckhoff. In the 1980s, Holmsen was within Chipahua, Jon Eberson Group and Jazzpunkensemblet. Kari Bremnes
Kari Bremnes (born 9 December 1956) is a Norwegian singer and songwriter. She got an MA in language, literature, history and theatre studies from the University of Oslo, and worked as a journalist for several years before deciding to dedicate herself to music full-time. In 1987 she received the Spellemann Award (Spellemannprisen) for the record ''Mitt ville hjerte'', and in 1991 for the record ''Spor''. With her two brothers, Lars Bremnes and Ola Bremnes, she received the prize for the record ''Soløye'' in 2001. She was also deputy board chairman of the Norwegian Society of Composers and Lyricists. Rob Waring
Rob Waring (born December 3, 1956 in Yonkers, New York) is an American-Norwegian Contemporary music composer and performer (drums and vibraphone), commonly associated with symphony orchestras and jazz ensembles. Career Waring studied with Roland Kohloff, who had just become timpanist of the New York Philharmonic, while still in high school. Then he continued studies on percussion at the Juilliard School with Saul Goodman and Elden "Buster" Bailey (1974–79), and earned his Bachelor and Master of Music Degrees. During that period, he also took elective courses in composition with Stanley Wolfe, and studied jazz vibraphone in 1975 with Dave Samuels. He started a career as a freelance musician in New York, and worked in symphony orchestras, jazz groups, ensembles for new music, and an experimental ensemble for homemade instruments. Maj Britt Andersen
Maj Britt Andersen (born 15 November 1956) is a Norwegian singer. Biography She was born in Østre Toten and is a sister of Inger Lise Rypdal. Her album ''Folk er rare'' from 1986 earned her Spellemannprisen. She was singing in the soul group Chipahua in the 1980s. She has also issued albums with texts by Alf Prøysen (''Kjærtegn'' from 1992 and ''Dørstokken heme'' from 2004). Andersen has also been a member of Asker municipal council for one term, representing a local party. Since 1983 she has been married to the bassist and music producer Geir Holmsen. Mari Boine
Mari Boine (born Mari Brit Randi Boine, 8 November 1956) is a Norwegian Sámi singer. She combined traditional Sámi joik singing with rock. In 2008, she became a professor of musicology at Nesna University College. Biography Mari Boine was born and raised in Gámehisnjárga, a village on the river Anarjohka in Karasjok municipality, Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. Boine's parents were Sámi who made their living from salmon fishing and farming. She grew up steeped in the natural environment of Sápmi, but also amidst the strict Laestadian Christian movement with discrimination against her people: for example, singing in the traditional Sami joik style was considered "the devil's work".
