1953 European Amateur Boxing Championships
The 1953 European Amateur Boxing Championships were held in Warsaw, Poland from May 17 to May 24. The tenth edition of the bi-annual competition was organised by the European governing body for amateur boxing, EABA. There were 117 fighters from 19 countries participating. Nicolae Linca
Nicolae Linca (1 January 1929 – 27 June 2008) was a Romanian amateur welterweight boxer. After winning bronze medals at the 1953 and 1955 European championships, he became Romania's first Olympic champion in boxing at the 1956 Summer Olympics. Fighting with a broken finger, he won against Fred Tiedt in a 3:2 split decision. Today, he remains the only Romanian boxer to win gold at the Olympics. His amateur record upon retirement was 281-25. After competing as an amateur, Linca turned to coaching in the sport. By the 1990s he was living in poverty and suffering from Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegeneration, neurodegenerative disease that usually starts slowly and progressively worsens. Sergei Semyonovich Scherbakov (20 July 1918 – 27 January 1994) was a Russian welterweight boxer. He won silver medals at the 1952 Olympics and 1953 European Championships, both times losing the final to Zygmunt Chychła. In 1944–53 Scherbakov won 10 consecutive Soviet titles. He retired with a record of 207 wins out of 227 bouts. Zygmunt Chychła
Zygmunt Chychła (5 November 1926 – 26 September 2009) was a Polish boxer. He won the first post-World War II Olympic gold medal for Poland. Career In 1939 he began training at the Polish boxing club '' Gedania'', having started boxing at the age 12. During the war he lost his Gdańsk citizenship and was compulsorily conscripted into the Wehrmacht in 1944. In France he deserted and joined the 2nd Polish Army, led by general Władysław Anders, in Italy. He returned to Poland in 1946. In 1947, he made his debut with the national boxing team of Poland, led by famous coach Feliks Stamm. He started at the 1948 London Olympic Games and reached the quarterfinal. Leszek Melchior Drogosz (6 January 1933 – 7 September 2012) was a Polish boxer and actor. Drogosz was born in Kielce. He thrice won the gold medal at the European Amateur Boxing Championships in the Light welterweight division at Warsaw 1953 and West Berlin 1955, and in the Welterweight division at Lucerne 1959. He participated in the Summer Olympics in Helsinki 1952, Melbourne 1956, and Rome 1960. He won the bronze medal at the 1960 Summer Olympics in Rome.
