1949 World Figure Skating Championships
The World Figure Skating Championships is an annual figure skating competition sanctioned by the International Skating Union in which amateur figure skaters compete for the title of World Champion. The 1949 championships took place from February 16 to 18 in Paris, France. At the men's event, the favorite, Dick Button won. At the women's event, however, the favorite, Eva Pawlik of Austria, who had been the Olympic runner-up behind Barbara Ann Scott one year before and who had just won the European title in 1949, dropped out because of a broken boot heel just before the free program.Kelli Lawrence, Skating On Air. Helmut Seibt
Hellmut Seibt (born 25 June 1929 – 21 July 1992) was an Austrian figure skater. He was the 1952 Olympic silver medalist, 1951 World bronze medalist, a two-time European champion (1951–52), and three-time national champion. Personal life Seibt was born on 25 June 1929 in Vienna. He married figure skater Inge Regner in March 1956. He died on 21 July 1992. Career Seibt began skating at age four, having been advised to take up an outdoor activity after suffering pneumonia. He practiced at the Engelmann club in Hernals, Vienna, under the guidance of Rudolf Kutzer and Karl Schäfer. Seibt was coached by Inge Lind-Solar after World War II. He won his first national medal, silver, in 1947. In 1948, he was sent to his first European Championships, where he placed seventh, and then competed at the 1948 Winter Olympics, finishing ninth. Jeannette Eleanor Wirz CBE (née Altwegg; 8 September 1930 – 18 June 2021) was a British figure skater who competed in ladies' singles. She was the 1952 Olympic champion, the 1948 Olympic bronze medalist, the 1951 World champion, and a double (1951 & 1952) European champion. Life and career Early life Altwegg was born on 8 September 1930 in Bombay, India. She was raised in Liverpool , the daughter of a Scottish mother and Swiss father. She was a competitive tennis player, reaching the junior finals at Wimbledon in 1947 before giving up the sport to focus on skating. Yvonne Sherman
Yvonne C. Sherman Tutt (May 3, 1930 – February 2, 2005 in Colorado Springs, CO) was an American figure skater. She won the gold medal at the U.S. Figure Skating Championships twice in ladies' single skating and once in pair skating with Robert Swenning. Sherman competed in both disciplines in the 1948 Winter Olympics. After her competitive career ended, Sherman became a skating judge. She was married to William Thayer Tutt, a prominent skating administrator and promoter from Colorado Springs. He was the 13-time Danish National Champion from 1940 to 1963 (held intermittently) and Nordic Champion from 1949 to 1951 and in 1953.
