The first of two 1947 Buenos Aires Grand Prix (official name: I Gran Premio del General Juan Perón, also known as the I Gran Premio Ciudad de Buenos Aires) was a Grand Prix motor race held at the Retiro street circuit in Buenos Aires on February 8–9, 1947. The scheduled competitions opened on February 8 with two preliminary rounds of the Mecánica Argentina – Fuerza Limitada and Mecánica Argentina – Fuerza Libre classes for a combined final which determined the qualification for the February 9, Formula Libre main event. Retiro, Buenos Aires
Retiro is a ''barrio'' or neighborhood in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Located in the northeast end of the city, Retiro is bordered on the south by the Puerto Madero and San Nicolás, and on the west by the Recoleta. History Towards the end of the 17th century and the beginning of the 18th was installed in the area, an asiento of slaves belonging to the Compagnie de Guinée and South Sea Company, that operated until 1739. In 1800 began the construction of Plaza de Toros del Retiro, a stadium of bullfighting built by the architect Francisco Cañete, that worked until 1819. In the Plaza de Toros took place the battles between the troops of Santiago de Liniers and the British army, occurred during the English invasions of 1806 and 1807. In 1821 was installed the first dissident cemetery of Buenos Aires, located in the vicinity of Iglesia Nuestra Señora del Socorro. 1941 Buenos Aires Grand Prix
The Buenos Aires Grand Prix, (also known as the Premio Ciudad de Buenos Aires) was a Formula Libre handicap race, organized by the ACA (Automóvil Club Argentino) and held at the Retiro Circuit on 23 November 1941. Entries were open for the national mechanic "Mecánica Nacional" class, based on series cars (Ford, Chevrolet, Hudson) and the "Coches Especiales" Grand Prix cars. Racing started with a preliminary Mecánica Nacional class elimination round (best five qualifying for the GP) which was won by Mario P. Chiozza (Bi-Motor Mercury). The class group received a one-minute handicap at the start of the GP main event. The GP class included Riganti's new Maserati 8CL (chassis 3034) that was entered in the 1940 Indianapolis. Maserati In Motorsport
Throughout its history, the Italian auto manufacturer Maserati has participated in various forms of motorsports including Formula One, sportscar racing and touring car racing, both as a works team and through private entrants. Beginnings One of the first Maseratis the Tipo 26 driven by Alfieri Maserati with Guerino Bertocchi acting as riding mechanic won the Targa Florio 1,500 cc class in 1926, finishing in ninth place in overall. Maserati was very successful in pre-war Grand Prix racing using a variety of cars with 4, 6, 8 and 16 cylinders (two straight-eights mounted parallel to one another). Other notable pre-war successes include winning the Indianapolis 500 twice (1939 and 1940), both times with Wilbur Shaw at the wheel of a 8CTF. Alfa Romeo P3
The Alfa Romeo P3, P3 monoposto or Tipo B was a classic Grand Prix car designed by Vittorio Jano, one of the Alfa Romeo 8C models. The P3 was first genuine single-seat Grand Prix racing car and Alfa Romeo's second monoposto after Tipo A monoposto (1931). It was based on the earlier successful Alfa Romeo P2. Taking lessons learned from that car, Jano went back to the drawing board to design a car that could last longer race distances. Description The P3 was the first genuine single seater racing car, and was powered by a supercharged eight-cylinder engine. Juan Gálvez (racing Driver)
Juan Gálvez (Buenos Aires, 14 February 1916 – 3 March 1963 in Olavarría) was an Argentine Auto racing, racing driver, and the brother of driver Oscar Alfredo Gálvez. Life and career Juan and his brother started racing together in Turismo Carretera but then took separate ways and competed in different cars. He made his debut in the Avellaneda Automobile Club 1000-Mile race on 14 February 1941 and finished second to Juan Manuel Fangio. His first win came on 22 February 1949 at the I Vuelta de Santa Fe Province, Santa Fe. He won the Turismo Carretera championship nine times, in 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1955, 1956, 1957, 1958 and 1961. His last victory was at the IV Vuelta de Laboulaye, Córdoba, Laboulaye (1962) behind the wheel of a Ford Motor Company, Ford. Death He was killed during an accident at Olavarría race in 1963. Carlo Pintacuda
Carlo Maria Pintacuda (18 September 1900 – 8 March 1971) was a motor-racing driver from Italy. Pintacuda was born in Florence on 18 September 1900. He was one of the greatest drivers from the "Florentine School" alongside Emilio Materassi, Gastone Brilli-Peri, Clemente Biondetti and Giulio Masetti, and won two editions of Mille Miglia races, in 1935 and 1937. After retiring from racing he lived in Argentina where he opened a grocery store.
