1946 French India Representative Assembly Election
The first election to the Representative Assembly of French India was held on 15 December 1946 to constitute the First Representative Assembly of French India. The election included Pondichéry (with 22 seats), Karaikal (12 seats), Chandernagor (5 seats), Mahé (3 seats) and Yanaon (2 seats). Yanam, French India
Yanaon or Yanam was one of the five principal settlements of French India between 1731 and 1954. Early years Reason for European interests The French in their earlier records do mention of their interest in establishing trade in the Northern Circars, which lie in the coastal regions of Hyderabad sultanate. The Northern circars are very important as they sway big influence in the court of Deccan Subah. This Subah is indeed the most important among all other provinces of Mughal empire in the Indian peninsula. The Mughal empire considers Deccan as their principal power. 1959 Pondicherry Representative Assembly Election
After the de facto merger on 1 November 1954 and before the legal integration with the Indian Union on 16 August 1962, second general elections were held in August 1959 to constitute Second Pondicherry Representative Assembly. Background the Congress, with the support of independents, was able to form a Government after first elections in 1955. However, that government was not stable as the ruling party was ridden with personal strife and factions. The Government of India had to intervene finally by dissolving the Assembly and the Chief Commissioner took over the administration in October 1958. Kamisetty Sri Parasurama Varaprasada Rao Naidu (2 October 1921 – 19 January 1989), popularly known Kamisetty Parasuram Naidu, was an Indian politician who served as the Speaker of Puducherry legislative assembly from 1985 to 1989. Mahé, India
Mahé, also known as Mayyazhi, is a small town in the Mahé district of the Puducherry Union Territory. It is situated at the mouth of the Mahé River and is surrounded by the State of Kerala. The Kannur District surrounds Mahé on three sides and Kozhikode District from one side. Formerly part of French India, Mahé now forms a municipality in Mahé district, one of the four districts of the Union Territory of Puducherry. Mahé has one representative in the Puducherry Legislative Assembly. The National Democratic Front (french: Front national démocratique) was a political coalition in French India. The movement dominated the political scene in the colony for a brief period until the emergence of a split between the socialists and communists in the coalition. The National Democratic Front was founded in January 1946. The front consisted of communists, socialists, the Mahajan Sabha and the '' Combat'' group (led by Julien Adiceam, who had arrived in French India from Algeria). Chandernagor
Chandannagar french: Chandernagor ), also known by its former name Chandernagore and French name Chandernagor, is a city in the Hooghly district in the Indian state of West Bengal. It is headquarter of the Chandannagore subdivision and is part of the area covered by the Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA). Located on the western bank of Hooghly River, the city was one of the five settlements of French India. Indo-French architecture is seen in the colonial bungalows, most of which are in a dilapidated state. Etymology The name Chandernagor is possibly derived from the shape of the bank of the river Hooghly which is bent like a half-moon (in Bengali, ''Chand'' means moon and ''Nagar'' implies city), so originally it was chander nagar. Karaikal
Karaikal ( /kʌdɛkʌl/, french: Karikal /kaʁikal/) is a town of the Indian Union Territory of Puducherry. Karaikal was sold to the French by the Rajah of Thanjavur and became a French Colony in 1739. The French held control, with occasional interruptions from the British, until 1954, when it was de facto incorporated into the Republic of India (de jure in 1962), along with Mahé, Yanaon, and Pondichéry. Etymology The origin of the word Karaikal is uncertain. The Imperial Gazetteer of British India gives its meaning as 'fish pass'.
