French India Representative Assembly
In 1946, French India (''Inde française'') became Overseas territory (''Territoire d'outre-mer'') of France. Then, in the same year on 25 October, the Representative Assembly of French India (''Assemblée représentative de l'Inde française'') of 44 members has been created that replaced the general council (''conseil général'') of 30 members. Formation During the start of Fourth Republic, by decree nº 46-2381, dated 25 October 1946, passed by the Government of France instituted a ''Representative Assembly in the French India''.Journal Officiel des établissements français dans l'Inde, 1946. People of both genders have been allowed to vote. This assembly had 44 seats in total. A member of this assembly was referred as ''Councillor''. French India
French India, formally the ( en, French Settlements in India), was a French colony comprising five geographically separated enclaves on the Indian Subcontinent that had initially been factories of the French East India Company. They were ''de facto'' incorporated into the Republic of India in 1950 and 1954. The enclaves were , Karikal, Yanaon (Andhra Pradesh) on the Coromandel Coast, Mahé on the Malabar Coast and Chandernagor in Bengal. The first election to the Representative Assembly of French India was held on 15 December 1946 to constitute the First Representative Assembly of French India. The election included Pondichéry (with 22 seats), Karaikal (12 seats), Chandernagor (5 seats), Mahé (3 seats) and Yanaon (2 seats). 1959 Pondicherry Representative Assembly Election
After the de facto merger on 1 November 1954 and before the legal integration with the Indian Union on 16 August 1962, second general elections were held in August 1959 to constitute Second Pondicherry Representative Assembly. Background the Congress, with the support of independents, was able to form a Government after first elections in 1955. However, that government was not stable as the ruling party was ridden with personal strife and factions. The Government of India had to intervene finally by dissolving the Assembly and the Chief Commissioner took over the administration in October 1958.
